LESBIANS ON THE LOOLE

MAY 1990 ISSUE

FREE

LESBIAN REPORT LAUNCH

"What is Lesbian Discrimination?", the

proceedings of forum held by the

Anti-Discrimination Board in October

1987, was launched by Steve Marks, the

board's President, on Monday 9th April.

At the function attented by about sixty

lesbians Marks said the report had been

such long time coming due to staff

changes and resource problems.

The 'B7 forum was held by the ADB to

discover why, despite homosexuality

having been an illegal ground for

discrimination for five years, the Board

had received very few complaints from

lesbians. Carmel Niland, the then

president of the ADB, is quoted in the

report: "I thought that because we had

Gay Police Liaison Group and because we

had Gay Consulation, the Board was

doing the right thing...and the lesbians

would come to us when they were ready...

why thought that when that strategy had

never worked with any other

disadvantaged group, don't know".

Lavender, from Lesbian Network, spoke at

the launch describing discrimination as

being the silences, denials, exclusions,

jokes, patronising and rudeness we

receive from our families, workplaces,

friends, schools etc. Judy Small, former

ADB Community Relations officer, spoke

about lesbians being defined solely on

the basis of what we do in bed: "If

didn't sleep with woman again in my

life, I'd still be lesbian."

"What is Lesbian Discrimination?"

contains many stories by lesbians about

discrimination they've faced and how

they dealt with it. Some are very sad.

One lesbian was raped because man

couldn't accept her change in sexual

preference, and another was rejected by

her mother when she came out to her.

Some tell stories of more everyday

experiences, such as being afraid to

wear clothes that look "dykey", or being

afraid to let men know they're lesbians

as they often view it as sexual

challenge.

Sue Wills discovered the perfect

comeback to "you're not really

lesbian, you just haven't met Mr Right

yet" when she said "perhaps you haven't

either, sir".

Judy Small tells another positive story

of time when she decided to have

luxurious weekend in five-star hotel

with her lover. When she called she

asked for double-room. The woman said

"what's the name?". Judy gave her

surname and was then asked for her

partners name. The woman said "that's Mr

isn't it". Judy said "no", and she said

"oh, you want twin room". Judy said

"no, want double room". And she

said, "oh, oooh". Judy said "yeeees".

The woman then said "I'm terribly sorry,

You'd think we'd have got used to that

sort of thing by now and apologise for

putting you through that." Judy suspects

that it is part of their training to

know about the Anti-Discrimination Act

and that they're not allowed to

discriminate against us.

"What is Lesbian Discrimination?" also

contains many recommendations made

during the forum to the ADB such as

allowing women-only venues as an

affirmative action, including private

schools and religious organisations in

the Anti-Discrimination Act's

provisions, giving legal recognition to

lesbian relationships. Steve Marks says

he hopes the report will be useful

tool for those involved in policy making

and community education.

Copies of "What is Lesbian

Discrimination?" are free and can be

obtained by calling the ADB 224 8200.

Another lesbian discrimination

workshop/seminar is planned for October.

Anyone interested can contact Anthea

Lowe, ADB, level 11, Bent St Sydney

2000.
