LESBIANS ON THE LOOSE

JUNE 1990

ISSUE

FREE

LESBIANS AND GAY MEN

FUTURE DIRECTIONS

The inaugural Lesbian Gay

Rights Lobby Conference was held

on the weekend of 19th 20th May

at the Mardi Gras Workshop. The

weekend kicked off with formal

dinner on Friday night attended

by 60 people. Cath Phillips

president of Gay Lesbian Mardi

Gras presented the keynote speech

and talked about the need for

Lesbians and gay men to work

togetherin coalition and our need

for an honest basis as the

founding of our working

relationships. Cath reminded us

that "we must actively seek to

retain our radicalism with

honesty and truth by trusting

each other and the broad

commonality of our needs."

After this inspiring start to the

conference, glance at the

program confirmed that it was to

be an exciting weekend. There is

not room here to go through all

the workshops and reccomendations

but will attempt to report on

few.

The reccomendations are long and

varied and copies of them can be

obtained from the Lobby group.

These reccomendations will form

the basis of charter of Lesbian

gay rights to be drawn up the

lobby.

Many issues where covered and

ideas from people abounded. Some

of the workshops included youth,

violence bashings, lobbying

local government the ADB. One

of particular interest and

relevance at the moment was the

workshop on immigration,

especially with the recent

changes to the immigration laws

which will affect Lesbian gay

men. Recommendations from the

workshop included "equivalent

rights for Lesbian gay.partners

of Australian citizens and

permanent residents with all

areas of migration and travel

regulations, with due recognition

of specfic circumstances of

Lesbians and gay men" and

"persecution on the grounds of

sexuality be recognised as

adequate humanitarian grounds for

granting of residence". The

workshop also considered that

both of these recommendations be

written into the immigration

regulations.

Another interesting workshop was

one which looked at the media and

the media's portrayal of Lesbians

and gay men. Some of the

reccommendations from this

workshop included setting up

network of people to "blow the

whistle" on media, trying to gain

more Lesbian visibility in the

media and setting up list of

guidelines for approaching the

media. At this workshop start

was made on media network, this

is list of people prepared to

contact the media via letters,

phone etc. in relation to Lesbian

gay issues. An extra note for

those Lesbians interested in

media accessibility and Lesbian

visibility SBS's program

"Hotline" has recently set up

camera at the AGPS Bookshop, 120

Clarence St, Sydney, which is

operating whenever the bookshop
