LESBIANS ON THE LOOSE

MARCH 1992 ISSUE 27

VOL. NO.

FREE

CHURCH OUSTS DYKES

The Anglican Church has finally admitted to having had

an active policy of excommunicating practising

homosexuals since 1985.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald of 12 February

the policy was the result of report by the Sydney

Synod's standing committee which recommended that

active homosexuals be excluded from communion and

any role in the church "if they persist after counselling".

One of the most insidious things about this policy is that

priests are specifically told not to inquire into person's

sexual habits, so they usually find out only when someone

confides in them because they are upset or confused. The

person is then cut off from the church at time when they

most need its support.

The SMH article points out that the Sydney Diocese of the

Anglican Church is also at the forefront of keeping

women from the priesthood. And this is at time when

the rest of the church and other denominations are

becoming more accepting, and at time when Anglican

numbers are falling.

Obviously priests will each apply the policy differently,

or not at all, but was appalled to read that the Rev.

Robert Forsyth, who believes that "Christian homosexuals

should be celibate", is the Anglican Chaplain to Sydney

University. In the Herald he claims never to have

excommunicated anyone, but in Viv Smith's letter to the

SMH of 16 February she states that she was

excommunicated by him for being lesbian.

In response to this article GaLTaS, the Gay and Lesbian

Teachers and Students Association, is to target religious

and private schools to determine the extent of the violation

of civil rights in Australia. In New South Wales religious

organisations are legally permitted to evict from living

accommodation and to dismiss from employment any

lesbian or gay man. GaLTaS is attempting to determine

the number of teachers sacked because of their sexuality.

Jennifer Glass, Co-convenor of GaLTaS, said that GaLTaS

wanted to end the centuries of hatred and abuse inflicted

by churches on lesbians and gay men.

Heather Hornt ved t, Con venor of the Parents and Friends

of Lesbians and Gays (PFLaG), likened this action to the

Church's refusal to ordain women priests. She said that

many were leaving the Anglican Church to join the

Uniting Church, or to form their own church. She is

concerned that because of the Church's policy many

lesbians and gays will be ostracised by their families.

It seems that the events of recent weeks prove that

religious groups should not be exempt from Anti-

Discrimination legislation, and it is about time that the

NSW Government did something about it.
