LESBIANS ON THE LOOSE

JUNE 1992 ISSUE 30

VOL. NO.

FREE

BASIC INSULT

by Stevie

On Thursday May 14, the film Basic Instinct opened at

the Greater Union movie complex in George Street.

The Gay and Lesbian Action on Media Association

(GLAMA) organised protest.

The film's run in the USA has been marked by ongoing protests

by lesbian and gay groups, and women's groups.

This movie is an insult to all women but particularly to

lesbians. According to Jay Turner, Female Co-Convener of

GLAMA, "Basic Instinct portrays lesbians and bi-sexual

women as psychopaths and murderers, and it features graphic

violence against women including rape and murders by the

Michael Douglas character, Nick, without any disapproval."

About 30 people attended the Sydney protest wearing signs

saying "Catherine did it" and handing out leaflets to people

outside the cinema explaining why they should boycott the

movie. This is the same approach that was used successfully

in the States.

Organiser, Andrea Wilson from GLAMA, explained that the

purpose of the protest was to raise people's awareness about

the harmful effects of such movie and hopefully to discourage

people from going to the movie.

"This is just one of string of movies which portray lesbians

and gay men as psychopaths and murderers. There has been

no positive images of lesbians in the mainstream cinema. The

impressions that people get from such movies affect the way

that they view lesbians and gay men and leads to increased

homophobia."

Bruce Grant, Co-ordinator of the Lesbian and Gay Anti-Violence

Project, said "At time when up to 25 people week are being

hunted down and bashed on the streets of Sydney solely

because of their sexuality, the last thing our community needs

is this type of Hollywood homophobia.

"The continued negative portrayal of lesbians by 'Hollywood

Babylon' will only lead to an increase in hate-crimes against

lesbians and gays."

The only mainstream media to attend the protest was Channel

9, but most of the lesbian and gay press was represented. There

were several people taking photographs with no visible

identification and one of the photographers was later seen

inside the cinema chatting with the management.

Andrea Wilson said: "We are aware that the promoters may

use our protest as publicity but we have discussed this issue as

group and have made conscious decision that the issue is

too important not to speak out. "Obviously the promoters

expected protest because they did not release the starting

time of the first showing until the day and there have been no

posters up around town. So we have already had some impact

on them."

The organisers indicated that no plans had been made for on-

going protest but if people are interested and want to get

involved they should contact:

run
