LESBIANS ON THE LOOSE

DECEMBER 1992 ISSUE 36

VOL. NO. 12

PARTY POLITICS

The Mardi Gras Party, at risk of being cancelled is now

more likely to go ahead. On November 11 South Sydney

City Council decided to allow Mardi Gras to apply to

use the Showground for the Party.

The Party's future became uncertain after the Council's lawyers

advised Mardi Gras' that the Party was "a prohibited

development under the City of Sydney Planning Scheme."

Now Mardi Gras will have to lodge developmental application

(DA), but mainly because of the shortage of time, it will only

need the approval of the Mayor, Alderman Vic Smith.

Once the DA is lodged, local residents will be notified and have

14 days to lodge objections or support. Mardi Gras President

Susan Harben said single complaint can result in the Party

having conditions imposed or in being banned. She does

however advise that lesbians and gays, especially those who

Acapella group Arramaieda launching their self-titled CD

at Pier on November 17th

Council to better ensure the party goes ahead. [s]

RECLAIMING THE NIGHT

More than4,ooo women marched

in Sydney on October 30; their

aim to raise public awareness

of, and express their anger about,

increasing violence against women.

During the rally at Town Llall, Reverend

Dorothy McMahon of the Uniting Church

of Australia asked "why are we doing

this?" The answer is "because we refuse

to lay down our dream of healthy

community for all". McMahon stressed

that men must accept the "corporate

responsibility" of their culture and asked

that the churches "stop teaching men

that they have God-given right to

dominate women". Messages of support

from all sections of the community were

read out, including pledge from Paul

Keating that his government would do

everything "within it's power" tosupport

the right of women to be safe. The Gay

and Lesbian Mardi Gras were thanked

for sponsoring the evening.

The theme of this year's march, Where

On Earth Are Women Safe From Rape,

reflected the global nature of violence to

women and children. Joy Balazo's speech

centred on the plight of one million

children in the Philippines currently

forced into prostitut-ion and denounced

the thriving Asian sex tourism trade. She

said that such exploitation represents

"total breakdown of human values", and

must not be allowed to continue. The

demands of Reclaim

the Nightare relevant

for women and

children worldwide

and include: uniform

sexual assault laws

and statistics; harsher

sentences for sex

offenders; for women

to be safe in our

homes and on the

streets.

During the candlelit

march up William

Street to Kings Cross,

asked several women what Reclaim the

Night meant to them. "It means freedom

it's about freedom and choice," said

one, while another believed "it means

empowerment for women". third said

that the march demonstrated "a great

sense of women's community (but that)

something should be done in Parliament

House" to end the violence. She echoed

point raised earlier by Rhoda Roberts of

SBS who questioned why no politician in

Australia has taken stand on the fact

that we have crisis in the male

community. At press conference to

launch the rally on the morning of the

march, NSW Labor MP Ms Dierdre

Grusovin, Liberal Upper louse member

Dr Marlene Goldsmith and Independent

MIA Ms Clover Moore, called for royal

commission to make recommendations

to justice and welfare agencies on how

best to fight domesticand sexual violence.

This year's march, the fourteenth since

Reclaim the Night began in Australia in

1978, coincided with statewide

confidential phone-in for sexual assault

victims/survivors, which urged women

to "let your voice help to make

difference". Organised by the NSW

Sexual Assault Committee, to increase

public awareness of the crime that so

often goes unreported, the campaign's

slogan was "Break the silence on sexual

violence".
