Fix this textCANDIDATES COURT LESBIANVOTE
Fix this textThe Election on March 13 is set to be
Fix this textthe first federal election where the
Fix this textmajor parties have openly courted
Fix this textthe lesbian and gay vote. Whilst we may
Fix this textstill not have learned how to flex our united
Fix this textpolitical muscles federally, we have proven
Fix this textour strength in N SW and the politicians are
Fix this textwell aware that there are particular seats
Fix this textwhere the lesbian and gay vote will be vital
Fix this textin this election.
Fix this textIn the city, inner west and east seats of
Fix this textSydney, Grayndler and Wentworth the
Fix this textlesbian and gay populations are sufficient
Fix this textto swing the seats. Sydney is a safe Labor
Fix this textseat with a margin of 15.3%, Grayndler is
Fix this texteven safer with a 17.3% margin to the ALP
Fix this textand with the 1992 redistribution, Wentworth
Fix this textbecame a slightly less safe Liberal seat with
Fix this texta margin of 4.9%.
Fix this textAlso worth looking at is the seat of Lowe
Fix this textwhich is amongst the most marginal in
Fix this textAustralia with Dr Bob Woods, the Shadow
Fix this textHealth Minister, requiring a swing of .5% in
Fix this texthis f avour to hold the seat. He has been
Fix this textmaking a lot of promises about AIDS
Fix this textfunding to woo the gay vote but many
Fix this textbelieve that they cannot be implemented as
Fix this textpart of Fightback.
Fix this textOur high concentration in particular areas
Fix this textmeans that, in theory, we have the
Fix this textopportunity to elect the people who will
Fix this textgive us the best deal. But it's not that simple.
Fix this textUnless you vote for an independent, you
Fix this textare also electing a Party who may not share
Fix this textthe views of your candidate and Party policy
Fix this textis likely to prevail.
Fix this textSo what do the main Parties have to offer us?
Fix this textDiscrimination
Fix this textMost people I spoke to from both the ALP
Fix this textand Liberals thought the current federal
Fix this textlegislation adequate but there were
Fix this textexceptions in both Parties who want to see
Fix this textlesbian and gay vilification clauses added.
Fix this textHowever, as part of Fightback, the Liberals
Fix this textare proposing the down grading or abolition
Fix this textof the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity
Fix this textCommission, the Affirmative Action
Fix this textAgency, the Office of Multicultural Affairs
Fix this textand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Fix this textprogrammes.
Fix this textThe ALP, with the support of the Democrats,
Fix this textlifted the ban on homosexuals in the Defence
Fix this textForces. If elected, the Liberals intend to
Fix this textreview this decision and seek the advice of
Fix this textthe Defence Chiefs.
Fix this textUnder the ALP Government homosexual
Fix this textrelationships have had similar recognition
Fix this textas defacto heterosexuals for immigration
Fix this textmatters and it was expected that this would
Fix this textbe extended to other areas before the
Fix this textelection. Unfortunately this did not happen
Fix this textin time. Whilst the Liberal Party did not
Fix this textactually refuse to comment on their policy
Fix this textin this area, I contacted several candidates,
Fix this textthe State Office, the Federal Campaign
Fix this textOffice, the Shadow Attorney-General and
Fix this textthe Shadow Minister for Industrial
Fix this textRelations, only to be told that it was someone
Fix this textelse's responsibility.
Fix this textAccess to Abortion
Fix this textBoth Parties consider this to be a conscience
Fix this textvote and do not have Party Policy. Of the
Fix this textcandidates I spoke to, all were pro-choice.
Fix this textViolence Against Women
Fix this textThe ALP has been making much mileage in
Fix this textthe Press from this issue with many promises
Fix this textabout what they will do if re-elected, in an
Fix this textattempt to secure women voters. The Liberal
Fix this textParty also has a detailed policy on women's
Fix this textissues which includes the issue of reducing
Fix this textviolence. The main difference seems to be
Fix this textthat the ALP intends to set up a number of
Fix this textenquiries and committees looking in
Fix this textparticular at the legal system and the
Fix this textLiberal's primary focus seems tobe attacking
Fix this textpornography which I worry may become
Fix this textan excuse for censorship.
Fix this textHIV/AIDS
Fix this textWhilst we would all like more funding, and
Fix this textthere is much criticism of slow drug
Fix this textapprovals, on the whole, the Labor
Fix this textGovernment has provided a high level of
Fix this textfunding, a comprehensive strategy and has
Fix this textjust completed a review of their strategies
Fix this textwith two reports being delivered last week:
Fix this text'The Evaluation of the National HIV/AIDS
Fix this textStrategy' and 'The Report of the Australian
Fix this textNational Council on AIDS Review Group'.
Fix this textIn the Fightback document, the Liberals
Fix this textpromise ongoing funding for HIV / AIDS but
Fix this textatthe same time, they propose changes to the
Fix this texthealth system which will mean bulk-billing
Fix this textwill be available only to Social Security
Fix this textrecipients. This will force everyone else into
Fix this textprivate funds which may not be willing to
Fix this textaccept you if you have a pre-existing
Fix this textcondition or are 'high risk' such as gay men.

Fix this textI.W.D.: CELEBRATING
Fix this textWOMEN’S STRENGTH
Fix this textInternational Women's Day will be
Fix this textcelebrated around Australia on the Bth
Fix this textof March with a wide variety of activities
Fix this textranging from marches and rallies to art
Fix this textexhibitions and multi-cultural nights. The
Fix this texttheme of this year's IWD is Celebrating
Fix this textWomen's Strength.
Fix this textThis year's IWD coincides with the
Fix this textupcoming Federal election. This may prove
Fix this textto be a bonus to women as the major parties
Fix this textwith their sensitive-new-age-guy leaders
Fix this textattempting to secure 'the women's vote'.
Fix this textWhile the mainstream media to a large
Fix this textextent has trivialised 'women's issues', the
Fix this textmajor parties interest and policy changes is
Fix this texttestimony to the ongoing power of women.
Fix this textThis year's IWD will provide an opportunity
Fix this textto indeed illustrate, celebrate and
Fix this textdemonstrate Women's Strength.
Fix this textIWD gives us the chance to highlight our
Fix this textissues, including childcare, domestic
Fix this textviolence, unemployment, the right to work
Fix this textin a harassment free space and equal
Fix this textemployment opportunities.
Fix this textThis year has seen a noticeable surge in
