Lesbian link to

male hormone

‘Madness’

By Barbara Farrelly Frances Rand

Little girls are made out of sugar and spice

and all things nice but lesbians are made

out of androgens.

The news that lesbianism in some women

may be an inherited trait not lifestyle choice

was delivered on June 15 at the 76th Annual

Endocrine Society conference in California.

Dr Robert Blizzard, retired University of

Virginia professor, presented case histories of

patients with an adrenal gland disorder that

causes foetuses to produce too much androgen.

Commentators in Australia, the US and the

UK, however, are dismissing the latest theory

from the American scientist that women with

more androgen, are "more likely" to be lesbian.

Head of Women's Studies at the Australian

National University, Dr Jill Matthews, describes

Blizzard's claim as "madness"

"What sort of test is 'more likely'? If the

adrenal disorder creates sexual preference

and that's an outrageous leap from endocrinology

to social behaviour then why doesn't it create

it in every case?

"One has to wonder about research like this

when we still do not have biological or

endocrinal explanation for heterosexuality,"

Matthews told LOTL.

According to Blizzard, studies have shown

that by injecting rats with androgens, "you can

take chromosomally normal female and change

sexual preference."

Blizzard's findings support 1991 study by

Los Angeles neuroscientist, Simon LeVay, which

found that group of cells in the hypothalamus

was smaller on average in gay men.

LeVay is now claiming these physical

differences "could well be influenced by androgen

levels".

But critics like Matthews say studies like

LeVay's that find differences in the brains of

homosexuals and heterosexuals are simplistic

and dangerous.

US academic and author, Lillian Faderman,

warns that linking gayness to gene or linking

lesbianism to hormone will undoubtedly

give some people hope for real homosexual

genocide.

Dale Spender and Anne Deveson on June 118.

The Lesbian Space Project is negotiating to

buy Distaff from owner Eva Cox for

$300,000. The 400 square metre building at

119 Church Street, Camperdown, is

currently zoned residential and South

Sydney Council will be asked to change

the zoning from its existing use as

warehouse to accommodate community

centre before the sale is finalised. The LSP

committee has announced membership

drive to coincide with Stonewall. Fees are
