Fix this textFling out the flag, and let friend or foe
Fix this textBehold, for gain or loss,

Fix this textThe Conference of Premiers in Melbourne has been
Fix this textproductive of the happiest results, and Federal pros-
Fix this textpects never looked brighter than at the present moment.
Fix this textMr. Dickson has promised that if New South Wales
Fix this textpasses the Bill he will do his utmost to induce the
Fix this textelectors of Queensland to accept it, and the Premiers
Fix this textof other provinces have taken up a similar attitude.
Fix this textMr. Reid has not got all he asked for. No alteration
Fix this texthas been made concerning inland rivers—a matter that
Fix this texthas caused much trouble ; and the Federal Capital is
Fix this textnot to be Sydney, nor within one hundred miles there-
Fix this textof, and, although it is to be in New South Wales, it is
Fix this textto be Federal territory, to consist of not less than one
Fix this texthundred square miles, and any Crown lands therein
Fix this textare to be a gift to the Commonwealth from New South
Fix this textWales.
Fix this textThe deadlock clause has been simplified and made
Fix this textmore acceptable to the democratic mind—the three-
Fix this textfifths majority having been struck out in favor of an
Fix this textabsolute majority.
Fix this textIt has been found impossible to better the Braddon
Fix this textblot —so-called —for the present, therefore it is decided
Fix this textthat for the first ten years that clause shall remain :
Fix this textthe Federal Parliament to have the power to alter and
Fix this textamend after that period.
Fix this textThe Federal Parliament shall sit at Melbourne until
Fix this textit meets at the seat of government.
Fix this textThe alterations are such as recommend themselves
Fix this textto Victorians, and there is no doubt but that the verdict
Fix this textof the 3rd June will be repeated—at least, in this
Fix this textprovince.
Fix this textMr. Reid promised to do his utmost to induce the
Fix this textpeople of N.S.W. to accept the Bill as amended, and
Fix this textshould they do so, it will then be submitted to the
Fix this textdifferent Parliaments for the referendum of the electors-
Fix this textThe Board of Directors would do well to consider
Fix this textand recommend what attitude the Association should
Fix this textadopt in the matter —whether to wait until the people
Fix this textof New South Wales give their verdict, or to discuss
Fix this textthe question right now.
Fix this textTO CONFERENCE DELEGATES.
Fix this textThe desirability or otherwise of discontinuing the Art
Fix this textUnion held in connection with the Annual Fete will be
Fix this textthe subject of much discussion at the approaching Con-
Fix this textference, and delegates will do well to consider both
Fix this textsides of the question, for on the result of the vote very
Fix this textmuch wiil depend. We do not intend dealing with
Fix this textthe pros and cons of the subject in this issue, but will
Fix this textleave that until later.
Fix this textThere is, however, a point somewhat connected
Fix this texttherewith that needs attention. Some of the ardent
Fix this textsupporters of both sides—principally those who advo-
Fix this textcate the continuance of the Art Union—are loudly
Fix this textthreatening to vote against any member of the Board
Fix this textwho dares to speak or vote in opposition to or in sup-
Fix this textport of —as the case may be —the Art Union. It is at-
Fix this texttemped to establish a species of terrorism.
Fix this textNow, it need not be feared that the actions of indi-
Fix this textvidual members of the Board will be greatly influenced
Fix this textthereby, but the result maybe, seeing that the contest for
Fix this textsome of the seats is very close, that a more eligible
Fix this textcandidate may be rejected by a few votes in favor of
Fix this textone less desirable because the latter may hold views on
Fix this textthe question more in accord with the majority of dele-
Fix this textgates. Such a result would be harmful to the Associa-
Fix this texttion, and the delegates should consider well before they
Fix this textallow their votes to be influenced by any considerations
Fix this textof the kind.
Fix this textThe Art Union is, by consent of the Board, entirely
Fix this textoutside the scope of that body. They have held aloof
Fix this textfrom settling the question as to its continuance or other-
Fix this textwise, deeming the Conference to be the proper authority
Fix this textto give or withhold sanction in that direction. What
Fix this textmore liberal action can be expected of them ? They
Fix this textrecognise that there is a great diversity of opinion
Fix this textamongst the members, and, rightly enough, they recog-
Fix this textnise that the Conference delegates, elected whilst the
Fix this textdiscussion was at its height, will more correctly repre-
Fix this textsent the true feeling on the question. And to the ver-
Fix this textdict of the delegates in Conference assembled they
Fix this textwill doubtless bow.
Fix this textThe Board of Directors are elected for other pur-
Fix this textposes than the running of Art Unions, and the correct-
Fix this textness or otherwise of the views on that question of any
Fix this textmember is no guarantee of his ability to assist in the
Fix this textconduct of the affairs of the Association. It is sufficient
Fix this textif in this, matter he permits the final decision to rest
Fix this textwith the Conference.
Fix this textWe hope that delegates will see she position in its
Fix this texttrue light, and pay no attention to the partisan-denun-
Fix this textciations of one-eyed delegates, but vote for the men
Fix this textwho are, in their opinion, most fitted to lead the Asso-
Fix this textciation in Association matters —remembering that, as
Fix this texteach year passes by, that work is becoming more and
Fix this textmore difficult, therefore the greater need of obtaining the
Fix this textservices of the ablest and straightest men obtainable.
