Fix this textWe will be glad to receive items of news and reports of branch
Fix this textmeetings, especially from the Country Branches. Such reports will
Fix this texttend to keep our members more in touch with each other, and
Fix this textpromote friendly intercourse in a manner that must be beneficial to
Fix this textthe Association.
Fix this textContributions, on National or Association topics, sent to the
Fix this textEditor, care of our Business Manager, will receive careful attention,
Fix this textand will find a place in our columns, should the subject be deemed
Fix this textof sufficient importance.
Fix this text“ Fling out the flag, let her flap and rise
Fix this textWith the rush of the eager air,
Fix this textWith the ring of the wild swan’s wing
Fix this textAs she flies from the swamp and her reedy lair.
Fix this textFling out the flag, and let friend or foe
Fix this textBehold, for gain or loss,
Fix this textThe Sign of our Faith and fight we fight—
Fix this textThe Stars of the Southern Cross.”
Fix this textThe Conference of 1899 is a thing of the past, and,
Fix this textafter a calm reckoning of the work accomplished, we
Fix this textthink that the delegates can be fairly congratulated,
Fix this textboth on the manner in which the work was done and
Fix this texton the work itself. And the reason tor congratulation
Fix this textwill be greater still if the Board, after mature considera-
Fix this texttion and weighing of evidence, are able to advise the
Fix this textConference of next year that some or all of the mea-
Fix this textsures submitted to it for consideration are worthy of
Fix this textbeing given a trial.
Fix this textAs Member Fitzsimmons said at Elsternwick, the
Fix this textConference was notable for the number of delegates
Fix this textwho pushed to the front rank and showed themselves
Fix this textworthy of assisting to govern the affairs of the Asso-
Fix this textciation when the older men step aside. This Mr. Fitz-
Fix this textsimmons looked upon as a happy omen for the con-
Fix this texttinued welfare of the A.N.A. President Roberts, at
Fix this textFlemington, also referred to this Confeienre as “ per-
Fix this text“ haps the most notable Conference ” by reason of the
Fix this textdeep and intelligent interest taken in its doings by the
Fix this textdelegates, and we heartily agree with both these gentle-
Fix this textmen. It augurs well for the future of the Association
Fix this textwhen the delegates go to Conference prepared to dis-
Fix this textcuss and vote intelligently—as they evidently did last
Fix this textmonth.
Fix this textThe president, in his opening address, touched—
Fix this textamongst other things—upon the large increase of sick
Fix this textpay—disbursements in that direction being increased
Fix this textone-fourth over the previous year. He said that a
Fix this textmore careful watch should be kept on this item of ex-
Fix this textpenditure, and appeared to think that the increase was
Fix this textin some degree at least due to what may be termed
Fix this textu mild malingering.” It evidently, however, did not
Fix this textstrike delegates to compare the disbursements of the
Fix this textsick fund with that of the funeral fund. Had they
Fix this textdone so, they would have found that while the increase
Fix this textof the sick fund is one-fourth, that of the funeral fund
Fix this textis still greater—namely, one-third. This fact proves to
Fix this textour satisfaction at least that the increase in sick pay
Fix this textwas an honest one, and that it is even below what
Fix this textmight have been expected, seeing the very great in-
Fix this textcrease in the expenditure from the funeral fund. Of
Fix this textcourse, no one can be accused of “malingering” on the
Fix this textlatter fund.
Fix this textAs was to be expected, technical education found
Fix this textstrong support, and the Board will doubtless add their ;
Fix this textvoice to the general clamor that is being raised to force
Fix this textthis matter on the Government. It would be difficult
Fix this textto name a worthier work to which they could lend
Fix this texttheir aid.
Fix this text1 he formation of an A.N.A. for females has been re-
Fix this textferred to them for consideration. This is a matter into
Fix this textwhich sentiment must not enter, except hand-in-hand
Fix this textwith plain matter-of-fact. Let us hope that such a com-
Fix this textbination is possible
Fix this textThe discussion of the art union problem showed
Fix this textto all and sundry what manner of stuff the A.N.A.
Fix this textis made of. The speeches on both sides were
Fix this textof top-notch order, and, though the debate lasted
Fix this textsome seven hours, its interest did not flag for one mom-
Fix this textent, Still that is but a detail besides the greater point
Fix this textof the friendliness that prevailed throughout. Friend
Fix this textand opponent were cheered alike, and a clever hit was
Fix this textrelished as much by those against whom it told as by
Fix this textthe party whose champion delivered it. This was as it
Fix this textshould be ; and the art union debate has not left a bad
Fix this texttaste in anybody’s mouth.
Fix this textThere was one statement made -with which we do
Fix this textnot agree. At the commencement of the Conference,
Fix this textthe delegates refused to adopt the recommendation of
Fix this textthe last Conference to the effect that no proposed alter-
Fix this textations to the General Laws be considered. When the
Fix this textsittings were finishing—at 3 a.m. on Friday—Mr. Wise
Fix this textreferred to that action, and said “ that delegates could
Fix this textnow see their error,” —apparently because it had en-
Fix this texttailed hard work and late hours. This remark was re-
Fix this textceived in dead silence. We hardly think that the dele-
Fix this textgates would have preferred shorter sittings and neglec-
Fix this textted work to long, sittings and the business of the As-
Fix this textsociation properly attended to. That was not their at-
Fix this texttitude when they threw out motion after motion for the
Fix this textadjournment of the art union debate in order that they
Fix this textmight attend the ball that was then taking place.
Fix this textAdvance Australia has now taken a permanent hold
Fix this texton the A.N.A. throughout Australasia. It is read from
Fix this textCharters Towers, Bananaland, to Coolgardie, in
Fix this text“the land of tinned vittles and gins,” as a poet of the
Fix this textA.N.A. has put it, and its universal acceptance is proof
Fix this textof two things : first, that there existed a want for such a
Fix this textjournal; and second, that this journal fitted the want.
Fix this textIn Victoria, it is known in every branch, and, if the
Fix this textletters of approval that are continually received are
Fix this textany indication, that knowledge is favorable.
Fix this textContributors from the length and breadth of the
Fix this textContinent write regularly for its columns, and press
Fix this textcorrespondents pour in their welcome monthly bud-
Fix this textgets—all proof of the popularity of the “Green-backed.”
Fix this textThis is most gratifying, especially when it is remem-
Fix this textbered that it is just two years since the paper made its
Fix this textfirst appearance.
Fix this textWith this issue, the original proprietor and editor,
Fix this textFred. Davison, concludes his connection with it—a con-
Fix this textnection that has been pleasant and profitable—and,
Fix this texthaving launched and successfully conducted it for two
Fix this textyears (with the kindly aid of many well-wishers), trusts
Fix this textthat its carreer of usefulness and prosperity will long
Fix this textcontinue.
Fix this textMr. Theo. W. Heide, the new proprietor, is known
Fix this textwherever the magic of the letters, A.N.A., holds sway,
Fix this textand under his direction Advance Australia will make
Fix this textstill greater strides in public favor.
