Biographical / Historical

William Blackwood (1776-1834) was born in Edinburgh and was apprenticed to an Edinburgh bookseller. In 1804 he opened a shop specialising in rare books. He began experimenting with publishing and in 1811-13 was appointed the agent for the London publisher John Murray and the printers James and John Ballantyne. In 1817 he launched Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, which was to have a remarkably long life. By the 1820s William Blackwood & Sons were the leading publisher in Scotland. It opened an office in London in 1840 and in the years ahead it was to publish works by many leading novelists, such as Charles Reade, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy and Joseph Conrad. The company was owned and managed by descendants of William Blackwood until it ceased business in 1980.

J. Buffett. Account of settlement on Pitcairn Island 1789-1841 (40pp), c.1841 (File)

Biographical / Historical

John Buffett (1797-1871) was a seaman on a whaling ship, the Cyrus, which called at Pitcairn Island. Together with John Evans he remained on the island and a few weeks later he married Dorothy (Dolly) Young (1797-1863), the daughter of the Bounty mutineer, Edward (Ned) Young (d. 1800). They had five children. Buffett's writings about Pitcairn Island were mostly based on the memories of John Adams (1767-1829), the last of the Bounty mutineers. Buffett and his family lived on Norfolk Island from 1856 onwards.
