MS 9399 comprises a typed transcript of Joseph Pettingell's diary, completed by a descendant, Joseph William Pettingell, in 1962. The original was kept by Joseph Pettingell as he sailed on the 'Thomas Laurie' in 1834. Joseph Pettingell (alias Linden), emigrated to Tasmania with his family in 1834 aboard the 'Thomas Laurie', which left London on 17 March 1834 and arrived in Hobart on 4 September 1834. Pettingell travelled under his wife's maiden name of Linden. The diary mentions the other passengers by name and describes the weather conditions, the activities of the crew and shipboard meals (1 folder).
Background
Joseph Pettingell was born in Barkway, Hertfordshire, on 3 July 1799 and died at Camperdown, New South Wales, on 13 January 1859. Joseph William Pettingell, born in 1879 in the United States, was a descendant of Joseph Pettingell.
