TRADE MISSION BACK FROM S-E. ASIA

MEMBERS OF AUSTRALIAN TRADE MISSION ARRIVING IN SYDNEY ON DECEMBER AFTER SOUTH-EAST ASIAN TOUR.

The visit of the Australian Trade Mission to Singa-

pore, Malaya, hailand and Burma had markedly

increased in those countries their awareness of Aus-

tralia and of the wide range of our products, said the

leader of the Mission, Mr. W. R. Hudspeth at the

conclusion of the Mission’s tour.

Most of the selling members did good business and

all were enthusiastic about substantial “follow-up”

orders. Several intended to return to the area within

the next lew months, and there was no doubt that the

Missions tour would greatly stimulate the two-way

traffic of Australian business men to South-East Asia

and Asian Government officials and traders to Australia.

The Government of Burma, for example, had indi-

cated that the next purchasing mission sent abroad

Irom that country would include Australia in its

itinerary, thus giving Australian exporters more oppor-

tunity to supply goods needed for Burma’s extensive

development programme.

In Singapore and Malaya, with which our trade

had increased more than tenfold in value since 1939,

the ission had opened the way for further expansion.

In Thailand, many new connections had been made

with local organizations and traders, and business

written despite the drastic import restrictions.
