STATE HIGH SCHOOLS. .
INCREASED ACCOMMODATION..
The "Directory of Education, on being
seen yesterday in regard to high schools,
said that the State High Schools at
Hobart and Launceston. reopened on
Wednesday, 28th January. The Hobart
school has now an enrolment of 33 third
year pupils,, 72 second year pupils, and
106 first year pupils, of whom 49 are
taking the secondary course, 28 the
teachers' course, 33 the industrial
course, 97 the commercial course, and
four the domestic course.
The accommodation in the old Trinity
Hill school is severely taxed, and it has
been founiUnccofcsnry to let a tender to
convert Ivy Lodge (the teacher's resi-
dence into a woodwork school. Tin's
plan to ill provide sufficient accommodation
till the end of the year. In the
meantime the emergency has been met
by hiring a room in the neighbourhood
until the contract is completed.
In Launceston the State High School
has now an enrolment of 11 third year
pupils, 63 second year pupils, and 104
first year- pupils, of whom 29 are taking
the secondary course, 43 the teachers''
course-, 29 the industrial course, 74 the
| commercial course, and three the domes
I race course. The pupils are housed in
a portion of the Charles-street building,
but this arrangement is most unsatisfactory,
inasmuch as it is pushing out
children to whom the school naturally
belongs. A local hall has been engaged
to accommodate some of the Charles
street children, and a contract has been
let for the erection of an open-air school
in the basket ball court of the Charles
street playground to meet emergencies.
It is hoped that by next year a substantial
suitable building will have been
erected in Launceston for high' school
purposes. 2 .- -:.
