OBITUARY
--------
MR. JOHN CALDWELL
--------
The death has occurred at his hone
in Gunning of Mr. John Caldwell, a
highly respected pioneer of the dis-
trict, at the age of 95 years.
The late Mr. Caldwell was born at
Fintona, County Tyrone, Ireland, and
came to Australia in the sailing ves-
sel Peerless in 1864, and, following
his trade as a builder, one of his first
jobs was the erection of a small
Presbyterian church at Sutton For-
rest. From there he came to Goul-
burn, where he remained for a time,
and then settled in Gunning in 1866,
as a builder and undertaker. During
his long residence in Gunning he
earned respect as a man of sterling
character. When he arrived in the
State the railway terminated at
Picton. He had a vivid memory of
the bushranging days.
The remains were interred in the
Gunning Church of England cemetery
on Monday afternoon, the Rev. Canon
Burgess officiating at the graveside.
Mr. F. H. Tonkin conducted the
G .U.O.O.F. burial service; the deceas-
ed belonged to the True Friendship
(Gunning) Branch, of which he was a
foundation member for 54 years.
The late Mr. Caldwell is survived
by two daughters, Mrs. F. McAlister,
of Darlington Point, and Miss T.
Caldwell, of Gunning :and six sons,
William (Trangie), Harry (Erskin-
ville) and John, Robert, James, and
Charles, of Gunning. His wife prede-
ceased him by eleven years. The late
Mrs. A. Lansdowne, of Goulburn , was
a sister of the deceased.
