GAOL FOR BEGGING
Stopped Men in Auburn Street
Sentence of seven days' gaol for hav
ing been in Auburn Street for the pur
pose of begging was imposed on
Robert Riley at the Goulburn Police
Court to-day.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge,
and Constable Linaker gave evidence
that following a complaint he saw de
fendant stop a man and ask him for
something. The man pushed him
aside and walked on. Witness was
closer when he stopped another man
and heard him say: "What about
giving me a couple of bob?" When
Riley saw witness making towards
him he ran in through the saloon en
trance of a hotel and out through the
public bar to Auburn Street. Witness
gave chase, and eventually caught him
at the corner of Auburn and Verner
Streets.
Riley gave evidence that he met a
man to whom he had lent 2/ at Nar
randera. He asked him if he could
return it, and was told to see him at
a hotel at about 4 p.m.
In imposing sentence, the Chamber
Magistrate, Mr. T. A. Doolan, who sat
on the Bench with Mr. A. Macintosh,
JP., said that Riley was liable to six
months' for begging.
