SAFE BLOWN
Work of Expert
POLICE INVESTIGATING
Believed by the police to be
the work of an expert, a safe in
the office of Messrs. S. A. Biurns
Ltd., timber merchants, was
found blown open when the store
was opened this morning. 'The
thief obtained only a few pounds
in cash for his pains.
The office in 'vhich the safe was
standing was in a state of disorder
when it was opened this' morning.
The safe itself was lying overturned
on the floor with ,the door 'blown open
and alm!ost off its lhinges, having. evi
dently ibeen shifted ,from its vosition
against the wall .by the forceof the
impact. It contained only about £3
in cash and the cracksman got away
with another £2 'rom drawers in
the 'main office.
From the safe which. ~was 'blown
open a key ,to another safe was tak
en, but. this contained only ,the firm's
books ahd, records.
'The police - found *haht entry was
gained by fo.rcing a window with a
jemmy at the .rear of the .building,
and the thief or thieves then wvent
directly ito the safe which contained
the wcash. .The 'fact that ;the sale,
'.vhich ,held; the 'boohrs was not tack
le si~ggests that the sife blowe" may
hiave rndide investigations before hand
and 'knew which safe to work ton.
NOISE MUFFLED
Overcoats in the office were used to
deaden the noise, but as the safe was
overtturned it ics thought that a pass
er-by would have heard it and would
have reported the 'matter to the
police..
MLr. R. Gray, living next door,
stated that ihe heard a noise which
auakened him during the night, but
as notihing else happened 'be dozed
off to sleep, again. 'He was unable 'to
fix the time definitely, 'but believes it
'would 'be betwveen 1 a.m, and 5 a.m.
