FINED £5
Disgusting Words
Described by the police as
filthy language, a string of in
decent words used by George
Kirkland., 56, a stranger to Goul
burn, cost him £5, in default 10
days' hard labour, at the Goul
burn Police Court this morning.
Kirkland who was discharged from
the Goulburn Reformatory yesterday,
made an appeal to the Chamber Mag
istrate, Mr. L. A. McDougall, to be
allowed to get away to Gosford, say
ing that hie had his ticket and had
work to go to there. Sergeant North
stated, however, that Kirkland's
ticket had been cancelled, as he had
failed to make use of it immediately.
Following Kirkland's plea of guilty
to the charge, Constable Hyde inform
ed the magistrate that when arrested
by Sergeant Bartholomew, Constable
Keegan and himself in Bourke Street,
defendant commenced to use the
language, and continued with it until
after he was locked up. Two women
were within three yards of him in
Bourke Street, where some of the
language was used.
Kirkland stated that he had only
just been discharged from gaol, and
had had a few drinks. He had his
ticket to Gosford and had work to go
to there.
"I would like to make a suggestion
that you adjourn the case and give
me a chance to go there" said Kirk
land, who added that otherwise he
would only have to go back to where
he was before. He had had some
cheap wine, and having had none for
some time, a few drinks had been
enough.
"All the more reason why you
should keep off the drink," commented
Mr. McDougall. "A man who uses
language like this deserves six
months."
The magistrate imposed a fine of
£5 for the language, and 10/, or 24
hours', for the drunkenness.
