AMUSEMENTS.
GRAND EMPIRE THEATRE. At
this place of amusement on Saturday
afternoon there was presented a
complete change of programme The
duet item on the list was "The Bloodhounds
of the Law," a detective story
which introduces an exciting race between
a motor-car and a locomotive A
film of exceptional ment is When
Society Calls," which features Miss
Lilian Walker and Earle Williams, and
another from the same studio, The
Other Woman," tells the story in teams
tic way of Mine Forest a celebrated
actress A film of great interest was
the scenic 'Heine," noted as the meeting
place of the Universal Postal Convention,
which had so important a bearing
upon the methods of transit between
the leading European nations Comic
subjects are amply provided for In" the
list To-night the bill will be repeated
SPENCER'S PICTURES
The star programme of Spencer's
Pictures at His Majesty's is vol j its active
Facing Eternity' headlines a
really splendid bill The star film is a
military romance depicting one of the
many incidents of the Franco-German
war in 1879 The Lady and the
Glove" is an attraction by itself, to say
nothing of the remaining splendid subjects
and the interesting topic of items
contained in Pathe's Gazettes, both from
Home and in Australia The latter
contained two local pictures of interest,
"Cecil McVilly in It arming" and "St
Virgil's College Sports" To-morrow
night is set apart as a grand naval and
military night Wednesday's entire
change will have for the star feature

THEATRE ROYAL
The adage that good wine needs no
bush" may easily be given as a reason
for not dealing at length with the excellent
programme now running at the
Theatre of Royal Show are, how pier, so
many turns and acts in the star" category
that it is difficult to dismiss them
with a brief reference The Five Musical
Lassies were most successful at their
opening, and judging from the ovation
they were accorded at the conclusion
of then performance on Saturday evening
that are already ton popular Their
artistic stage setting and then music
pleased the huge audience immensely,
and the solo items were all redemanded
The Stories are undoubtedly the most
popular purveyors of ragtime that have
appealed in Hobart 'Their appearance on
Saturday evening was the signal for
a tremendous outburst of applause, and
no fewer than half-a-dozen songs were
extracted from the lady performer,
whilst her partner was recalled for his
xylophone and piano playing in the
art of trick and other skating the Le
Brun's stand on a plane of their own,
and then agility on the rollers if we
may kable 1 her refined wit and pleasing
hat mony introduced by Large; and
Snee were much enjoyed, as also were
the numbers given by Hart and Kenny,
who were in particularly fine voice, and
received much deserted applause The
Tossing Testrow and the mirth-provoking
Wuffo w e e not the least successful con-
tributors to a bill that is rich in all-
round talent
KING'S THEATRE
A complete change, of programme is
to be shown at the King's 'Theatre this
evening the management have secured
the rights for Hobart of a Selig star
feature e, entitled "Law and the Outlaw The
principal part is entered by Mr
Dicks who is noted for performing
death defying" feats Apart from this
star the following pictures will be
shown - Net ei Known to Smile,
"who Rig Nag," His Secret,"
"Bodihn Becomes a Lady," On the
Blond Stmwaj," and others. The
King's Theatre is now under the min
agement of J L Le Breton, who has
been for many years manager for the
leading firms on the mainland A com-
plete new orchestra is to be installed
BRIDGEWATER MCL FAIR
The twelfth annual fair of the Bridge
water Ministering Children's League was
held on Saturday afternoon The fair
was opened by the Hon J V Evans,
who expressed the pleasure he felt in
opening the fair, and United that the
proceeds of the day would come up to
expeditions The Warden (Councillor H
T Sähet) thanked Mr Evans for his
kindness in opening the fair
There was a good attendance of visitors,
including Mrs. Salier, Captain and Mrs.
de Hoghton, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Piesse,
Mrs. Hodgman (president), Mrs. James
(treasurer), and Miss Hodgman (secretary).
The stalls were well furnished, and,
brisk business was done during the after
noon, the capacity of the hall being taxed
to its utmost. Considering the time in
the year, the- produce stall had a good
turnover. The sweets stall was nicely
decorated with asters.
Following are the names of the stall-
holders: League stall. Mesdames James
and Paul, and Miss Daisy Hughes;
flowers, Mrs. C. A. Wood and the League
children; fish pond, Misses Street and
Cloak: produce, Mesdames 'Harris and
Foster and Miss Hodgman; afternoon tea,
Mrs. Rodwell and the Misses Rodwell. .
CONCERT AT BROWN'S RIVER.
The Hobart Orchestral Society held a
concert at the Kingston Beach-hall on
Saturday, evening, and met with a good
reception. The items, were given by the
following artists. Misses Hanson and
Chadwick, -Messrs. Valentine, Lear,
Smith, and Cooper; also a brass quar
test party.- The orchestral items were
much appreciated, under the conductor-
ship of Mr. P. Gray, and the concert
was very successful.
UNIVERSITY COMMEMORATION.
The annual commemoration of the
University of Tasmania is to be held at
the Town-hall this afternoon.
There is to be an organ recital and
sacred concert at the Chalmers Church
this evening.
