.:GOULBURN WINS
'Varsity Shield Match
Goulburn High School's' Rugby
League representatives advanced
a further stage in: the Univrerslty -
Shield competition at Cootamun
dra ont Saturday last, when thley
defeated Tumut in an even con
test, by 7 points to 3.
GoulbunrJ was oliviously the heavier
team, and as thile teanis lined up prior
to the kick-off, the difference in size
was so marked that Tumut's pros
pects seemed far from .bllight: Wha;
they lacked in size and weight, how
ever, they made uIp in vigour, ansd
the Goulhurn folorwardslt were comrn
Delled to hattlf sterniy throughout.
Generally, the match was a tuss1le
between the opposing packs and in
side backs, andt only on two or three
occasions( did thile ball reach the wing
men of either team. On one such
occasion Connolly (G.) put in a fine
run to score in the coiner. Ostara's
attempt at goal jlst fell short.
The game swung up and down
field, neither team having much ad
vantage in regard to territory.
Tumut opened the, scoring with a try
by J. Williams ofter poor tackling on
Goulburn's part. At the interval,
however; Goulburn led 5-3.
Goulburn's teamwork showed an
improvement In lthe second half,
which was similar in. many respects
to the first period. .McNlven (G.)
played a splendid game at half-back,
while the five-eighth, Jones, altllough
an honest worker, suffered from lack
of experience. Dropped passes by
the i'emaining backs spoilt the few
oppDsrtunltles they received.
Ostara kicked two good psnally
goals, and had'the misfortune to touchl
the dead-hall line after crossing as
the result of a fine run. He deserved
a try.
The forwards were all hard work
ers, Andersos and Broadhnrs't in par
ticular. The former's low tackling
was~ an exaniple that, all the others
might well follow. Williams raked
well, giving his side a fair share of
the ball.
Goulburn was represented by
Brloadhurst, Williams. Nordsvan.
Thorosesnhood, Cumberland, Andler
son, McNiven (cat.), Jones. Cnn
nollyu, Matson. Twemlow, Ostarn,
Conners. Mr. E. Atklnson was in
charge of the team.
Mr. W. M. Hughes, K.C., yesterday
addressed the New South Wales Com
mission on behalf of the New South
Wales Unity League. He declared
that the New States proposal had Ino
slhstance, and was a political move
ment for an economic end.
