To the Editor of "The Mercury."
Sir-Re your remarks on the necessity
of the construction of the direct
line to Queenstown (West Coast) from
Hobart, the main point of advantage of
this line which is urgently desired by
every resident of the West-is that it is
absolutely indispensable as a defence line
The West Coast could be cut off and reduced
to starvation in a fortnight, and
could be made an invader's ransom, with
the ultimatum, "Hobart surrender or the
West Coast dies " But with the direct
line from, say, Russell Falls to Queenstown,
and a cross line (defence also from
Port Davey to the most valuable position
on the direct line, we could laugh
at all the nations that would threaten
us here At present we are helpless, and
still worse, a menace to Hobart, because
of the reasons named
To wait for a work for a letter! to go
all round Tasmania, in fact, for the lad
to take it on a journey the shape of a
horseshoe, instead of cutting across only
half of Dil open end of the shoe is sheer
madness, and it is certain it affects our
borrowing pou ii, when business men-fin
