Department Tops Exporters
The Department of Supply has won the nation's highest export award
for selling the Australian-made Jindivik overseas.
The chairman of the Cham
ber of Manufactures Export
Awards Committee, Mr. T.
M. Ramsay, announced the
decision yesterday.
Mr. Ramsay said the award
had been made in recognition
of the Department's outstand
ing export achievements in
selling Australian made and
designed defence equipment
overseas.
This included the sale of
the Jindivi'' pilotless target
aircraft to highly sophisti
cated markets throughout the
world, inc1 ling Europe and
America. Export sales ex
ceeded £3.5 million last year.
"The Department of Sup
ply has not only made a sig
nificant cr tribution to Aus
tralia's export income from
machines and ideas, but it
has also elevated Australia's
international reputation in
the field of advanced tech
nology," Mr. Ramsay said.
Blue Streak
"It is appropriate the
award should be announced
at the time of the projected
launching of the 'Blue Streak'
rocket at Woomera with
which the Department is
closely connected."
The Export Award pro
gramme is organised jointly
by A.C.M.A. and the Depart
ment of Trade for outstand
ing achievement in exports.
Winners receive an "E for
Export" flag which can be
[flown over their premises and
an illuminated Export Certi
ficate signed by the Minister
for Trade and Industry, Mr.
McEwen.
The Minister for Supply,
Mr. Fairhall, said that he had
learned with great pleasure of
the award. The Department's
activities had earned a total
export income of over £11
million in the past five years.
Items exported included
the Jindivik and the Malkara
anti-tank missile now opera
tional with the British Army:
Important supplies, including
clothing, telecommunications,
optical and engineering
equipment had been exported
to a number of countries.
