Advisory Council poll - three days to go
Liberals accused
of fence-sitting
The chairman of
the ACT Advisory
Council, Mr J. H.
Pead, has accused the
Liberal team for the
council election of
"fence-sitting" and
"preaching nonsense".
He said yesterday, "Mr
Leedman and his colleagues
are neither responsible nor
irresponsible because while
the council has been work
ing tirelessly in the interests
of the citizens of Canberra
Mr Leedman and his run
ning mates have been con
fined to limbo and are now
trying to justify their ap
pearance by plucking at
straws.
"Their belated entry into
the hospital dispute brands
them as fence - sitters.
"Their belated plea for
pensioners should have been
made when the Liberal
Government was framing
j its Budget.
j "Their frantic attempt to
Mr Pead Help
Mr Pead
| secure votes from pension
ers who are suffering at the
hands of the Liberal Gov
ernment will undoubtedly
end in failure".
He added that Mr Lced
man could not expect the
electorate to take seriously
the nonsense he was
preaching.
A Labor team member,
Mr R. O'Keeffe, said last
night that the Liberal
Party policy for the election
appeared to be a "rehash"
of parts of the Labor policy.
Mr O'KecfTe, deputy
chairman of the retiring
council, said the Liberals
were trying to make a
comeback to the Advisory
Council elections.
Defeated
in 1959
"The Liberals had taken
no interest in Advisory
Council elections since they
were badly defeated in
1959", he said.
"I deplore the tactics
adopted by Mr Leedman in
seeking to discredit those
who have served the council
over the last three years.
"I would have had more
respect for him and for his
team as opponents had Mr
Leedman been prepared to
combat the elections on the
merits of his policy instead
of engaging in a smear
campaign".
Mr Leedman had said he
agreed for the most part
with the Labor policy issued
two weeks ago.
"Only today did he pre
sent the Liberal Party
policy which merely appears '
to be a rehash of some of !
the points previously made <
by Labor", Mr O'Keeffe i
added. 1
