Bon Randcll has strong \*ieu'S on the lack of
opportunity available to actors in this country.
He emphasises a point at. his hotel last night.
The world's his stage
T?ON Randell, star of
There's A Girl In
My Soup, opening to
night at Canberra
Theatre, said it was
only a lucky accident
that enabled him to
come back to Australia
to take this part.
He had been offered the
part here at a time when
it fitted perfectly into a
"mass of other theatrical
commitments".
In Canberra after his
arrival yesterday he said:
"As an international
actor I have no home. My
luggage is spread across
nine hotels in Europe and
America and so are my
friends".
Born in North Sydney,
Randell left this country
(after acting in Australian
productions) 20 years ago.
He has returned twice for
brief visits, most recently
in 1960, when he spent a
few days in Melbourne
and Sydney on a promo
tion tour for the film
King of Kings.
These days he works in
theatre, film and tele
vision.
"I have just finished a
picture in Spain with
Robert Taylor, called
Savage Pampas. Prior to
lhat I completed a colour
TV show — Showcase for
America, with Japanese
star Yoko Tani.
"I think my next part
will be a play, on Broad
way. The last Broadway
role was male lead in The
World of Suzie Wong,
five years ago".
Mr Randell says he finds
theatre infinitely more
satisfying than films or
television.
"A professional actor
needs the feel of an audi
ence to bring out a sensi
tive response. It is a pity
that acting in Australia is
a depressed profession.
How can an actor gain
the cxpcricnce he needs or
devote the time and
energy necessary to the
profession if he has to
drop out and do tele
vision commercials to
make a living?"
