Ten new I
caps in
Springbok
squad >
JOHANNESBURG.
Monday (AAP-Rcutcr).
| — South Africa's rugby
union Springbok squad
to tour Britain later this
j month contains 10 new
caps.
The 30-man team, an
nounced yesterday, con
tains only a few surprises
and includes most of the
stalwarts that have made
South African rugby so
strong in recent years.
The selectors held off
! choosing the touring party
; until after Saturday's Curric
Cup final, in which North
jern Transvaal defeated
Western Province 28-13.
i Obviously influenced by
the game, they chosc nine
! players from Western Pro
vince and six from North
ern Transvaal to make the
live-match tour.
Biggest surprise was the
inclusion of Western
Province's Mike Lawless as
understudy to veteran fly
half Piet Visagie, who set a
world record during the
recent Australian tour of
South Africa for the num
ber of points — 43 —
scored in a Test series.
De Villiers again
captain
Lawless had a mediocre
game in Saturday's match
and has been recalled after
piaying in only one inter
national, against France in
1964 when the Springboks
lost.
Dawie de Villiers. who
has led South Africa in 15
of the 18 Tests he has
played, again captains the
side from the scrum-half
position.
His understudy, Dirk de
Vos, clinched his place in
the touring party with a
brilliant display in the
fourth and final test of the
Australi'.ui tour.
The most serious problem
facing the selectors was the
lack of top class centres.
Eben Olivier, of Western
Province, and Tonie Roux,
of Northern Transvaal,
were obvious, choices - but
after Gniqualand • West's
Mannetjies Roux announced
his retirement they had to
look around for younger
blood.
They finally ' opted for
Western Transvaal's Johan
van der SchyfT a^Joban
van vlcr Mcvsvc, of Stcjten
bosch University, both maK
jng their international debut.
