S. African cricket
squad is named
CAPE TOWN, Wednes
day (AAP-Reuter). — The
South African cricket team
announced today to tour Aus
tralia from October this year
includes five new caps and
some of the world's greatest
cricketers.
Newcomers to international
cricket are Transvaal all
rounder Clive Rice, Eastern
Province opening bat Dassie
Biggs, Western Province bats
mail Hylton Ackerman and
Natal opening bowler Vincent
Van Der Bijl.
The team will be captained
by Dr Ali Bacher, a medical
practitioner who captained the
victorious Springbok side
against the Australian tourists
last year.
The batting line-up notably
features Natal's Barry Richards,
no stranger to Australian fans
after his prolific Sheffield Shield
season with South Australia.
Richards is currently rated
the best batsman in the world
and drew huge crowds virtually
everywhere he played in Aus
tralia during the past season.
. The side's batting line-up has
tremendous depth with Lee Ir
vine and Denis Lindsay, the two
wicketkeepers, both on form
with the bat during the last
season and names like Ali
Bacher, Eddie Barlow and
Graeme Pollock, who are
enough to worry any bowler.
Great captaincy
Bacher has had a
poor season personally,
but the victory of his
Transvaal side in the
Currie Cup Provincial
League Championships
and his great captaincy
of last year's team were
enough for him to keep
the job.
Natural choice of vice
captain was Eddie Barlow,
captain of the Western
.Province side which svas
runner-up in the Currie Cup
and beat Transvaal in the
final of the Gillette Cup
knock-out championships.
Mike Procter, rated along
1 side England's John Snow
as ihc fastest bowler in the
world, will match Richards
for crowd appeal.
He will spearhead the
Springbok attack and is no
mean performer with the
bat as he showed when he
equalled the world record
of six successive hundreds
in first-class cricket this sea
on.
Opening the bowling with
him will be the elder of the
two Pollock brothers, Peter.
If the side has a weakness
it is in the rather limited
talent currently available to
fill the spin and medium
pace bowing berths.
Two specialist spinners
are included, bolh left
handers, Grahame Chevalier
and new cap Peter de Vaal.
Pat Trimborn and Vintcent
Van Der Bijl are both med
ium-fast and will take over
the attack from Procter and
Peter Pollock after the
[shine has been worn off the
new ball.
Graeme Pollock Help
Graeme Pollock
On paper the side Jooks
like the strongest inter
national team in the world
at the moment and should
prove too strong for _ an
Australian team dispirited
by losing the Ashes to Eng
land for the first time in
over a decade.
