Thomson
loses
title
MELB'OURNE, Sun
day. — Golfer Peter
Thomson, plagued by
putler problems and un
able to wipe off the
deficit of his first-round
77, failed by only tvyo
shots today to become
the first triple winner of
the Victorian Open.
The man who stopped
him wus Iris playing partner
Guy VVolstcnholmc.
Ironically, Thomson had
been feeling sorry for Wol
stenholme when he went
through a spell of the hor
rors yesterday.
Wolstenholme shot a last
round 70 for a one-over-par
total of 289, the highest
winning score for many
years in a major Australian
golf championship.
In the end Thomson be
came the man to beat for
Wolstenholme but the
player who nagged at him
through most of the final 18
holes was an' unknown,
Jamie Child, of Colombia.
Child, .29, had to produce
his credentials to the Aus
tralian PGA before he was
accepted for the $13,000
event,
However, he left no doubt
in the minds of the thous
ands who watched the
finish that he was a class
golfer, tough he has had
only two years' professional
golf experience.
A testing 6ft birdie putt
on the 18th hole by Thom
son nosed Child, who also
had a birdie 4, out of equal
second and earned Thom
son $1,600 and Child
$1,200.
