PROISY ELIMINATED
SYDNEY, Tuesday.
— Frenchman Patrick
Proisy was eliminated
from the men's singles
at the New South
Wales tennis tourna-
ment which opened at
White City, Sydney,
today.
Pioisy, who reached the
semi-finals of the recent
Australian Open tourna-
ment, was one of the fav-
ourites for the State title.
He was bundled out by
little-known Hungarian
player Robert Machan
6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
The result was an upset
after Proisy's sound form
in Melbourne, and his win
in the Western Australian
tournament three weeks
ago. He was seeded No 7.
No 1 seed Ken Rose-
wall, an early elimination
from the national titles,
defeated Kiyo Tanabe, of
Japan, 7-5, 6-4.
Second seeded John
Newcombe lost the first
set 6-7 to Japanese player
Jun Kamiwazumi before
racing through the next
two sets 6-1, 6-1.
The most colourful
first-round match was be-
hveen Alex Metreveli, of
the Soviet Union, and un-
seeded French Davis Cup
player Thiery Bernasconi.
Metreveli disposed of
Bernasconi 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in
a fiery match.
Hans Plotz, of Germany,
was quickly knocked out
of the tournament by No 3
seed Mai Anderson, 6-3,
6-4.
In a first-round women's
singles match Evonne Goo-
lagong defeated Sally Irv-
ine 6-0, 6-3.
Top seed Margaret
Court did not play. She
meets Chris Mattison to-
morrow.
Mrs Court, trying to win
her ninth NSW Open, had
a walk-over today, giving
her an opportunity to re-
cover from her nagging
stomach muscle injury.
The complaint has forced
Mrs Court out of the
women's doubles in which
she was to have partnered
British player Virginia
Wade as top seed.
Miss Wade won her first
round match 6-1. 6-1
against Adrianne Avis, of
NSW.
