WA in sound position
PERTH: Liule-known medi
um-pacer Peter Faulkner was
Tasmania's hero on the opening
day of the Sheffield Shield
match at the WACA Ground
yesterday when he took three
Western Australian wickets for
five runs in the space of 19
deliveries.
After a day of fluctuating for
tunes, Western Australia was in a
sound position at stumps at eight
for 328, with Tom Hogan on 19 and
Dennis Lillee on four.
Late in the day, the Western
Australian total was boosted by a
swashbuckling 51 by Rod Marsh.
Faulkner, a 22-ycar-old Laun
ceston physical-education student,
caused Western Australia to slump
from four for 240 to seven for 252
when he removed Greg Shippcrd,
Ken MacLeay and Bruce Yardley
in rapid succession.
Faulkner, who is playing in his
third first-class match, had earlier
dismissed Graeme Wood for seven
and he finished the day with four
for 85 off 25 overs.
Western Australia won the toss
and batted on an easy-paced pitch
on an extremely hot day, and after
a rather scratchy opening partner
ship of 55 between Bruce Laird
and Geoff Marsh, West Australia
crashed to four for 112.
Then it was the tall MacLeay
and the diminutive Shipperd who
rescued the side with a fifth-wicket
partnership of 128 in 118 minutes.
The stand ended when Shipperd
mistimed a cut at Faulkner and
was caught by wickctkecper Roger
Woolley.
