Tasmanian pair blitzes
leaders' weary attack
BRISBANE: Tasmania, aided by
centuries from all-rounder Peter
Faulkner and Keith Bradshaw, posted
its highcst-cver score against Sheffield
Shield leader Queensland to take first
innings points at the Brisbane Crickct
Ground today.
Chasing Queensland's first innings
total of 384, Tasmania blitzed a weary
Queensland attack to declare at nine
for 507.
It was the Apple Isle's highest score
against Queensland, surpassing its
nine declared for 505 made in Hobart
five years ago.
Faulkner's innings was of one of the
most entertaining knocks seen at the
'Gabba for many years.
The 24-year-otd Launccston all
rounder came to the wicket with
Tasmania needing 66 runs to
overhaul Queensland's total.
But once the target was reached, he
launched himself into a series of sixes
against a weary Queensland attack.
Tasmania resumed after tea at six
for 411, with Faulkner on 47 and
Bradshaw on 89. Then the onslaught
began.
The.pair belted the Queenslanders,
who were without international Carl
Rackemann, for 53 runs in only 16
minutes with Faulkner leading the
way.
Faulkner, an Esso scholarship win
ner, took his score to 71, taking 24
runs off one over by off-spinner
Graham Whytc with two sixes and
three fours.
In the proccss, he brought up a
quickfire 100 partnership with his
teammate in 134 minutes.
He was eventually out going for a
big hit off leg-spinner Trevor Hohns,
skying the ball straight to John
Maguire at deep mid-on.
The 24-year-old right-hander, who
made an unbeaten 59 for the Prime
Minister's XI, ended his innings of
100 with eight boundaries and seven
towering sixes, including one straight
back over the head of a dejected
Queensland skipper Jeff Thomson.
Faulkner shared a 7th wicket stand
of 169 with Bradshawin 175 minutes.
Bradshaw's innings was in stark
contrast.
He laboured at the crease for almost
seven hours before he was out for 121,
including II boundaries.
Queensland workhorse John
Maguire, who sent down 43 overs in
his mammoth bowling performance,
shattered Bradshaw's stumps for 121,
to give him his third victim.
