Morris West
assured of
success
AjONDON, Tuesday (AAP). - The 20th
novel of Australian Morris West, 'The Clowns
of God', will be published this week with:the
author already assured of financial success.
, The publisher,.Hodder and:Stoughton, paid him
f100,000 (SA 188,000) to get him on.their list, accord- .
ing to The Sunday Times magazine.
Arid it was spending f20,000 (SA37.800) advertis
ing the new novel, about a pope who has a revelation
about the end of the world, and his discreet removal
from office by his cardinals.
Sunday Times interviewer Hunter Davies de
scribed the Melbourne-born West as one of the world's
top story-tellers in commercial terms - one of about
10 writers who could receive £100,000 fdr their next
story before writing a line.
West said he was half-way through writing 'The
Clowns of God' when he was taken ill in Florida,
suffering an intestinal haemorrhage.
He said he realised that unless doctors could stop
the bleeding he would be dead. He kept calm, told
his wife not to worry; all his affairs were in order,
and'advised his son Michael what to do if he died.
But he survived.
Davies said West had four homes - a house in
Surrey, England, a New York flat, a Florida house
and one in Australia.
West, 65, thought he and his family eventually
would go back to Australia to live, Davies said.
