Institute nominates
' para-scholarships'
Winter paralympian and gold
medallist Michael Milton, of
Pearce, will receive Australian
Institute of Sport scholarship
benefits this year as he prepares
for the 1994 Winter Paralympics
in Lillehammer, Norway.
Relay gold medallist Allan
Butler, of Tumut, will move to
Canberra to take up a residential
scholarship with the institute.
He will join David Evans,
who will continue his training
under the AIS coach for athletes
with disabilities, Chris Nunn.
The AIS's director, Robert de
Castella, announcing 1993's 23
AIS scholarships for athletes
with disabilities, said the Insti
tute would work with the recipi
ents to maintain Australia's
impressive international status
in disabled sports.
"The results from the recent
Summer Paralympics in Barce
lona and Madrid, and the earlier
Winter Games in Albertville,
demonstrate what can be
achieved," he said. "I'm pleased
the institute played a major role
in assisting several athletes in
the past and hope these new
scholarship holders will contin
ue the fine tradition set by previ
ous recipients."
Among the returning athletes
are some of the top performers
in Barcelona and Madrid, in
cluding Louise Sauvage (triple
gold medallist), Joseph Walker
(nine gold), Rene Hardenbol
(five), Joshua Hofer (four) and
Priya Cooper (three). ■
