NOTES AND NEWS.
THE Rev. A. B. Davis, of Sydney, who is on a visit to Mel-
bourne, read the Touroh last Saturday at the Bourke-street
Synagogue, and will to morrow read Mussaf at the same place of
worship. The rev. gentleman has also been asked to preach, but
as he is here solely to enjoy a brief holiday he has felt impelled to
decline the invitation.
AMONGST those who have passed the final examinations for the
B.A. degree of the Melbourne University are two lady co-
religionists—viz., Miss Adele Ellis and Miss Flora Rosenhain.
Mr. Louis Braham has passed the first year's law examinations.
AT the monthly council meeting of the Melbourne Jewish Aid
Society held on Thursday evening, the 3rd November, there
were present—Messrs. P. Blashki, J.P. (president), R. Moss
(treasurer), S. Fryberg (hon. secretary), B. Marks, A. Loel, J.
Phillips and W. Davis. The usual preliminary business having
been despatched, the treasurer reported that borrowers had repaid
during the preceding month to the amount of £57 12s. Applica-
tions for loans, with the reports thereon of the inquiry sub-
committee, were then considered. Eight loans, amounting to £107
10s., were granted in sums as follows—three of £10 each, and one
of £25, £20, £15, £12 10s. and £5 respectively. A sub-committee
was appointed to look into and report at next monthly meeting
touching certain accounts in arrears. This concluded the business,
after the adoption of a vote of thanks to the chair.
LAST week a few members of the East Melbourne Hebrew
Congregation, being friends of the Rev. J. Lenzer, presented that
gentleman with a beautiful piano and music stool as a small token
of their esteem and regard. The rev. gentleman expressed the
greatest surprise and pleasure at being the recipient of such a gift,
marking the kindly feeling of the members towards his family and
himself.
PRIOR to the New Year holidays a new white silk curtain
(Porouches) and coverings for the reading desk and pulpit were
presented to the St. Kilda Hebrew Congregation by some of the
ladies of the congregation. A suitable acknowledgment from the
Board of Management has been received by Mrs. B. Levinson, who
was the principal mover in the matter.
M. BISCHOFFSHEIM intends to erect another observatory.
Accompanied by several astonomers he has gone to Mount
Mounier, on the summit of which, at an altitude of 2800 metres,
his new observatory will be built.
BARON M. VON COHN, banker to the Emperor of Germany,
celebrated his 89th birthday, and the 75th anniversary of the
establishment of his banking business, on the 19th of September.
His Majesty presented him with the Grand Cross of the Imperial
Household set in brilliants.
A CORRESPONDENT writes to a contemporary from Bokhara, that
the opening of the Trans-Caspian Railway has been a thorough
blessing to the Jews. Through the trade they do with Russian
merchants who visit the country, their material position has been
sensibly improved. Concurrent with this improvement civilisation
and education have made progress.
