OVERLAND MOTOR RACE.
"NO PART OF ROUTE IMPASSABLE."
Major Dudley, l'olice Commissioner, re
turned on August 1C from an extended tour
of the Territory. He has travelled more
than 3,000 miles along the track which
will he used in the north-south motor
race from Adelaide to Darwin. He states
that from Katherine to Alice Springs, the
road to Newcastle Waters, a distance of
300 ' miles, is good ail the way. At
Banka Banka, there is a creek 80 yards
wide, which is very eandy, and from there
oh are a number of sandy creeks, but
none is very bad, and cars can negotiate
safety as far as Taylor'* Creek. This
is 200 yards wide, and the Band is very
heBvy. There is another difficult creek
at WoodrufTe, about 90 miles from Tay
lor's. This is 50 yards wide, and is very
sandy. From there on is a good road to
Alice Springs, and thence south the toad,
for 70 miles, is sandy, but cars can
negotiate it on low gear. Major Dudley
states that Taylor's Creek was the
worst his car went through. . He thinks
that the difficult creeks■ should be cor
duroyed, and that the timber should bo
pinned down with side rails to prevent
it from washing away in the wet season.
There is, he says, plenty of water all
along the route for cars, and timber is
handy for corduroys. The 70 miles of sandy
mad rould he covered with ironstone.
It fould be made easy running for cars,
but heavy wagon traffic would have to
be hawed. One difficult creek close to
Devil's Marbles could he avoided hv de
viating one mile west. The road there
is very rough with boulders for several
hundred yards, but this could be cleared
at a steal! expense. 'Uo part of the
road is impassable," Eaid Major Dudley,
"but I have not seen it in the wet season.
There is some glorious country east of
ArJtunga, and all over tablelands.
Major Dudley is very enthusiastic over
the proposed motor race.
