THE COLONIAL TIMES
THE REGATTA DINNER
The Regatta Dinner was given the
same evening, and owing to the good
feeding, which was so plentifully on
board all the vessels, a very small com -
any assembled. About thirty sat down
to dinner at the Commercial Hotel at
seven o'clock, when a most splendid re-
•pof was served up. The table was laid
for a alv*TT.< s is t y , and had it been given
any other day, a
£ i» .« JttSrudvd, C"WHTf fdelicory « f 'ire
stlvMJn was served up, nail wiuer of su
perior esreileace., wore i;i prnfusion.
The company were highly delighted with
the dinner, and every thing went off well
and pleasantly. Thomas Hewett, Esq.
was Chairman, and Captain Kelly, Vice.
Can it be true that an Act of Council
is in preparation, to alter the number of
the British Jury, from twelve to seven
individuals. We have heard such re-
ported, but cannot believe it. Trial by
Peers, trial by Juries is all a farce, if
because twelve are too many for one
individiul, seven must be appointed.
We shall further comment on these ex-
traordinary proceedings.
The Wooden Jetty on the Old Wharf
will be immediately commenced upon.
A meeting was held a few days since at
the Commercial Hotel, for the purpose
of considering the most desirable plan,
&c., when the necessary arrangements
were ultimately determined. A subscription
has been taken in hand, and
already nearly amounts to the sum required.
We are glad to notice the soires are
about to recommence in the Argyle
Rooms. Thursday evening will be the
first—of course there will he a full house.
We understand a new musical instr-
ment will be introduced, called the Accordion,
which for sweetness and softness
of time cannot be excelled.
W e have seen the cup w tncli is be
given by Mr. Rowlands to the winning
galloway at New Town the 19th, and
a very handsome piece of plate it is.
Reckoning the value of the plate, and
the number spoken of entries, the race
will be well worth sixty pounds or upwards.
It is rather singular, and much to the
credit of Mr. Watson, that he is the
buillder of both the Fox and the Daisy,
both winners at the Regatta. Mr. Green ,
we understand built the Beppo, ex-
pressly for the races, and frightened all
opponents from the water.
The only accident which occured du-
ring the Regatta, was the bursting of
the first gun fired on board he Mary
and Elizabeth, by which the mate of the
brig was tridiugly wounded in the
thigh.
