BRISBANE, Wednesday.
T11 the Supreme' Court to-day application
was mode on behalf of Inch and Co., of
Liverpool, owners of ' the barque Oakland,
for setting aside' the writ issued against
the Oakland.?,' ' detaining the vessel
until a claim for £19u, by lMailler and Co.,
of Sydney and Brisbane, was paid. His
Honor refused the application, and ordered
the actioii to bo tried in the courts.
The engineering trade of the colony is
exceedingly busy, nnd the railway depart
ment experiences great difficulty in obtain
ing engine fitters nnd boiler makers.
J'lie report of the Police Commission was
handed in to the Premier to-day, but it will
not be available for publication till it has
been tnblcd in tho Assembly. It is under
stood tliat tlie report, apart from evidence,
is very lengthy, and there are also two indi
vidual reports, one by the chairman, JuSge
Noel, regretting that the commission did
not travel, and, another by, Mr. F. W. Dick
son, embodying/stronger opinions than those
expressed in the- general report on a certain
phase oF ppfic'eiaclniihjstration. It is under
stood that the ieport generally recommends
some important reforms in the Police de
partment.
A meeting of ' the Byrnes memorial com
mittee, which was held to-night, broke up
in disorder. The question arose whether
or not Mr. Sinionetii's offer of a bronze
statue for £1800 should bo accepted, the
committee having at the previous meeting
accepted Mr. Simonetti's model conditional
011 tlie price being favorable. However, to
day a tender ' from Mr. Wales, a local
sculptor, for £1000 ivas received, and a heat
ed argument arose. The mayor finally left
the chair, and nq decision was arrived at.
