A COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY.
AN ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING.
LIBERAL SUBSCRIPTIONS RE-
CEIVED.
An enthusiastic meeting of gentlemen inter
cstcd tn the establishment of a college of dent
istry in Molbourno waw held nt the Vienna Cafe
last night. The meeting wan convened by a
circular iasuod by a committee of ways and
means, comprising representatives of the Mel
bourne Dental Hospital and leading members
of the profession. About (>0 gentlemen were in j
attendance, and Mr. Donald McGregor pre I
sidod.
The Chairman, in opening the meeting, said it |
was time that the establishment of a sohool of j
dentistry in Melbourne should bo seriously con j
sidored. Victoria boasted of a medical school
which was a credit to it ; and a. school of
phannuoy that had turned out many good men.
He saw no reason why a school or colleges of
dentistry, which was a branch of science quite
as important as the others, should not bo
founded. (Hear, bear.) There were numbers
of students who left our shores to qualify iti
England or America who should be nhlo to
receive their training hero at much less expense,
and a properly conducted college in Victoria
would attract- students froin all parts of Aus
tialia. (Applause.)
Mr. J. llitfc, a member of the committee,
said it was proposed to afliliutc the Melbourne
Dental Hospital with a college of dentistry, to
ho known aw the Australian College of Dentistry
and Melbourne Dental Hospital. Tho Mel
bourne Dental -Hospital was opened in Sep
ivtnbui, 1GH3, and had giv»n giatuttuu.- udricu
and treatment to thousands of needy people
wlio were suffering from diseases of tho "teeth.

SKUJ7 extractions, 3815 children's teeth,
2I:V» fillings, 102 Dealings, 2701 dressings,
1032 -advised, 44 treatments of irregular
dentition, 288 minor operations, 155 aduiims

local amestliesia. This gavo a total of 20,390
operations fur six years and nine months, at a
cost of £G3G. (Applauso.) The hospital had
never been in uout, uitnougn it aid not rcceivo
Government assistance. (Hear, hear.) It was
now proposed to coinbino with it a college of
dentistry, which wns sndly. needed, and ho be
iicvcd it would provoa great success. The sum
of £250 or £300 was required to commence with,
hut he should like to buo a start mrulo with
£.500.
Mr. K. Jaskc, lion, see rotary, announced that
the subscriptions up to date towards tho pro
posed now institution amounted to £229. (Ap

Dental Hospital, ami promises to aid the college
ami hospital by its cordial" co-operation, and by
annual subscriptions, donations and life subscrip
lions. .......
Ho trusted tho meeting-would give its warmest
fuippoit to the proposal. Ho knew of many
cities much Btnaller than Melbourne where there
were two and three dental colleges, and ho was
surprised to think such a college had not been
established in Victoria long since.
Air. A. 11. Clarko seconded the motion,
which was warmly supported by Messrs. E. J.
Dillon, AY, -"Witt, G. Stoddart, l5. A. Simpson
ami ft. E. Wills; and carried unanimously.
Air. Murks announced on behalf of a number
nf students prcsont that they would givo tho
institute their cordial support.
Air. P. MTntyro, hon. treasurer, then inti
mated that during the ovening he had received
'subscriptions or promises from those in the
room amounting to £173. (Laud applause.)
Tho following were amongst tho subscriptions

After subscribers bad handed in their names,
nominations wore received for tho council, and
it was resolved that bheso flhould remain open
until Wednesday next. The meeting tuon
adjourned until Thursday evening noxft, wliou
the council will be elected.
