Liberal Stir
Over Flinders
CANBERRA, Wednesday.
—The news that Colonel
Matron Annie Sage is
favored for the Liberal
party pre-selection for the
Flinders by-election on Oc
tober 18 has caused mild
consternation in a large
section of the Parliamentary
Liberal party.
At least one Victorian
Minister and most Ministers
from other States, as well
as many rank and file mem
bers, claim that it would be
inviting disaster to put up
a woman candidate.
They are high in their
praise of Matron Sage's re
cord, but state that even
her distinguished service
record will not carry much
weight in what promises to
be a bitterly contested cam
paign.
Members who are canvas
sing her pre-selection quote
her great service record as
something that will have
great political appeal, but
other Liberals are just as
emphatic in ' stating that
Flinders cannot be won by
a woman candidate.
Air Marshal
to Stand
Air Marshal George Jones,
former Chief of Air Staff,
will stand for L.C.P.1 pre
selection for Flinders.
Air Marshal Jones was ap
pointed Chief of the Air
Staff in 1942 and retired
from the post late last year.
