Paintings of Elma
Roach
At noon to-day, at the Athen-
aeum Gallery, the Lady Mayoress
(Mrs. Campbell) will open an
exhibition of works by the late
Elma Roach. The collection con-
sists of 41 oil colors, seven water
colours and a drawing in char-
coal. The subjects are chiefly
landscapes and flowers.
Although varied as to matter
and handling, these studies have
a general monotony, owing to the
absence from all of them of any
personal conviction. Most of the
landscapes in oil colors have a
certain Cezanney cast, but, be-
ing derivative and imitative, lack
the vitality which nearly, all ori-
ginal work carries. The paint-
ings, however, have one good
quality - the lines of their com-
positions run happily for the
eye. This virtue, unfortunately,
is no compensation for pallid
color and the lack of values, and
consideration of edges necessary
to produce pictorial depth. Tex-
tures, too, have no place in the
latc artist's interest. Conversely,
the flower pieces have color, but
not sufficient form. The seven
water colors are pleasant, but not
impressive.
This exhibition will remain
open until Saturday, March 20.
