IRON SMELTING.
"We have already mentioned in our telegrams
that the process of smelting iron ore had been
successfully commenced at the works near to
Mount Jagged. "We have seen a sample of the
ore which has been brought to town, and we
believe it is all that the promoters of the works
expected it to be. There are two kinds of ore
in the neighborhood of the works—magnetite
and hematite. M. Dubois, the Manager, has
commenced with the latter. It was expected
that there would be about 20 tons of pig iron
manufactured by Tuesday night. Everything
has gone on successfully so far. The ore in the
locality is abundant—almost inexhaustible—
and it is now proved that it can be smelted
with the charcoal made on the spot. We wish
the spirited promoters success in their Opera
tions.
