THE GOVERNMENT
ACTUARY.
Although the Government Actuary.
Mr. H. D. Gouge, did not appear
much in the limelight, he was unquestionably
an officer of conspicuous
ability, and his retirement under the
Act is a distinct loss. Mr. Gouge is
;i. and has been in South Australia
for 58 busy years. He is an old St.
Peter's College boy. and drifted
from a land and estate agency of his
own organization to the Land and
Income Tax Department when it was
established. Mr. Gouge was appointed
assessor, and during his association
with that office he made three
triennial assessments of the whole i f
the land of South Australia. He was
the first Public Actuary, a position
which was created in 1894, and his
outspoken comments in connection
with friendly society accounts won
for him great admiration as a fearless
and capable critic. The new Actuary
is Mr. J. G. Hammer, son of Mr.
John Hammer, of East-End Market
fame. He is 43. and has been in the
service since 1887. Mr. Hammer was
educated at Prince Alfred College,
so that each of the two leading scholastic
institutions has supplied South
Australia with an Actuary.
INVASION OF POLITICIANS.
The South-East has just had an invasion
of Liberal politicians. There
have been eight of them in some part
of the big electorate for the purpose
of taking part with the Premier in his
long political campaign, and to see
the country which is only now awakening
to the importance of greater
railway facilities. Beside Mr. Peake.
there were the Speaker (Hon. L.
O'Loughlin), the Government Whip.
Capt. Ritchie, the Hon. A. W. Hannaford,
M.L.C.. and Messrs. Moscley.
H. D. Young, and Bodey, and Representative
Livingston. With one exception,
Air. Bodey, who is the Pre-
mier's colleague. was present at
every meeting, and they were meetings
of record dimensions right
throughout the tour, which extended
from Keith to Tantanoola. It was
Air. Bodey. however, who was largely
responsible for the importation of the
politicians in bulk. They said there
was no chance of resisting his entreaties
to go and see the garden of
the Stale. They went, and were surprised
and impressed. The South-
East is bound to have more railways
sooner or later. Xot this session,
but if the Liberal Government should
be returned at the next elections it
will be able to promise some big projects.
The personnel of the Government
Hansard appointments is splendid
proof that a competent and experienced
staff has been obtained. It is a
di stinct compliment to The Register
and The Advertiser that members of
their literary departments have supplied
all the vacancies, and that not a
single importation from elsewhere has
been necessary. The Register has
provided the Government with its
Hansard leader, assistant leader and
a reporter, and the Waymouth Street
newspaper has added two reporters
to the list. Mr. Fred Johns, who will
be in charge of the new staff, is himself
well known as the author of
"John's Xotable Australians." He
has been associated with The Register
in various capacities for about 2S
years, and latterly has been cable editor
and one of the leader writers. Mr.
Rodney Cockburn. the assistant
leader, was one of the most capable
members of the reporting staff before
he became an excellent sub-editor;
and Mr. W. C. Calder has always been
prominent in the journalistic circles
of the historic daily. The years of
their service in The Register would
total over 80 years. Messrs. H. M.
Johnson and A. E. Wilson have been
associated with The Advertiser for a
long time, and have been esteemed for
their professional qualities.
