REPRESENTATION
A.N.A. TAKES UP CASE
FOR CANBERRA
Action by State Boards
Proposed
The conference of the Australian
Natives' Association of N.S.W. held
at Hotel Wellington on Saturday
night placed on record its profound
regret that citizens of the Federal
Capital Territory were denied the
exercise of the franchise in the elec-
tion of the personnel of the Common-
wealth Parliament, and resolved that
the State Board be asked to re-
quest the Prime Minister in the com-
ing session to make the necessary
provision for granting a representa-
tive to Canberra.
It was further resolved that the
various State boards of the A.N.A.
be written to by the N.S.W. branch
in this connection and asked to for-
ward similar resolutions to the Prime
Minister.
In moving the resolution, Mr. C. H.
McFadyen said that he found that
remarkable ignorance existed outside
Canberra concerning the fact that
citizens of the Territory were denied
a vote. He said that the responsibil-
ity for this failure towards Canberra
residents did not attach to any par-
ticular party but to every party. The
absence of the franchise in Canberra
was the result of continuous neglect.
No member of Parliament could be
found to take the initiative in reme-
dying the position. The citizens of
Canberra were reduced to the same
category in regard to the franchise
as criminals and aliens.
He pointed out that it was well-
known that Ministers were advised
by their heads of departments in re-
gard to public matters. It was an
anomaly that persons who were con-
sidered fit to advise the Ministers in
the Government of the country were
not considered fit to take part in
the election of the Ministers as mem-
bers of Parliament.
The motion was seconded by Mr.
T. J. Carmody and carried unani-
mously.
