Costly British Films
For Melbourne
Numerous British films which have cost a fortune to
make are listed for release in Melbourne.
QAUMONT BRITISH has just com-
ploted a group of five of the biggest
productions it has ever made.
The Corporation intends to make fewer
pictures annually in the belief that in
this way it will raise the gcner.il level
of production and win a larger share
of the world market.
"As You Like It," produced at a cost
of £180.000, with Elisabeth Bergncr in
the role of Rosalind, will be presented
early next year at the Athenaeum, which
is now being renovated and redecorated
at a cost of £10,000.
This picture was produced by Inter-
Allied Productions and directed by Dr.
P.itil Cr.intwr. Elisabeth Berencr's hus-
band.
"Wings of the Morning." Britain's first
all-technicolor picture, with Annnbclla,
the French star, in the lead, and the
famous tenor, John McCormnck, as a
singer, has been made by New World
Productions as the first of a series of
large-scale films. It cost £150,000.
Other pictures in the series will be
"Under the Red Robe/' with Conrad
Vcidt and Raymond Mnssey; "Cyrano dc
Bergerac" and "The Broken Road." For
each production a big star cast is pro
mised.
Paul Robeson is starred In the British
Lion production. "Song Of Freedom/'
which will be presented nt the re-open
ing of the Athenaeum on Boxing Day.
Gaumont-British has just completed
the following, nt an average cost of
about £100,000:—
"O.H.M.S.," a story of Army life, made
with the co-operation of the War Office,

Homolkn nnd Desmond Tester.
"The Great Barrier," a story of the
building of the Canadian Pacific Rail
way. with Richard Arlen in the chief
role.
"King Solomon's Mines," the Rider
Haggard favorite, with Sir Cedric Hard-
wickc, Roland Young. Paul Robeson,
John Lodcr and Anna Lee.
"Head Over Heels," a Jessie Matthews
musical.
