Good start for
new theatre
Frank Thring's Arrow
Theatre at Middle Park
was launched last night
in a combined atmosphere
of new paint work, first-
night scent, and incense
from the stage. The old
repertory theatre had a
surprisingly sophisticated
air.
Both the plays — Chris
topher Fry's "A Phoenix
Too Frequent" and Wilde's
"Salome" — were admir
ably produced by Irene
Mitchell.
Wilde's consciously evil
play had obviously been
chosen as much for the
opportunities it gave for
richness of mounting and
dressing as for its lush
psalm-echoing lines.
Frank Thring's Herod
was memorable, and June
Brunell's ' intense little
Salome convincing in most
things.
The Fry play, in the
cleverly lighted gloom of
its tomb set, was a pro
perly dry and amusing
aperitif. Pearl Schweig
and Betty Rockman both
did very well..-
