THE TURF.
TO-DAY'S FIXTURES.
Coolgardie (first day); V.A.T.C. Grand
National Meeting (first day).
NOTES AND CHAT.
The goldfields racing carnival will open
at Coolgardie this afternoon. The full
programme and other information, tele
graphed by "Ormonde," will be found
elsewhere.
Weights for the second day's minor
events of the Coolgardie Club are dne
after to-day's racing. Acceptances for
same are due on Monday, at 5 p.m.
The V.A.T.C. Grand National meeting
will be inaugurated this afternoon, the
G.N. Hurdle Race being' the principal
event.
For unnecessarily punishing his -mount
(St. Faustino). which ran second in the
Stetchworth Plate, at the Newmarket
meeting, in England, last month, D.
Maher. the jockey, was severely censured
by the stewards
We have received from Mr. H. Byron
Moore, secretary of the V.R.C., a book
lef containing the programmes for that
Club up to the end of the year, weights.
for the Melbourne Cup, and nomination
for the classic events up to 1909.
The Kensington Park Turf Club will
hold a two-davs meeting next week.
Nominatins close on Monday morning,
at Pertl,.0md Fremantle, at 10 o'clock.
The programme is advertised.
The meeting of Slieve Gallion and Tra
onair. the "crack" two-year-olds of Eng
land. did not come off in the July. Stakes
run at Newmarket on July 3. The
"Sportsman" has the following in refer
enice to the race :--" It is a pity that up
to the present the acknowlelged juor'nile
chamnions have not met. It was hoped
that Captain Greer would send Slieve
Gallion to oppose Traquair in the July
Stakes. and. had such .a decision been
arrived at. there would have been no
limit to the' interest in the event. As it
was,. in the absence of the Beckhamnton
crack, the race was devoid of all ex
citement. for it wea generally admitted
that nothing but an accident could de
prive Lord Roaseberv's Traquair of the
spoils. To a certain extent this occurred,
for when the barrier went up the fa
vourite was half turned round. and 'lost
a lot of groundl. but his wonderful turn
of speed soon placed him on an eeuality
with his two oppoonents. and. after once
getting on terms. Maher had the race
won all the way. Many Newmarket
judges regard Lord Rosebery's colt as the
best two-year-old trained on the heath
for many a year. and, if looks go for
anything. they are not very wide of the
mark. for a nicer-formed colt it would be
difficult to imagine."
On Julu 5. at Ihe Newmarked (Eng.)
meeting. Roseate Dawn. trained by J. E.
Brewer. won the nrincipal event on the
day's programme (the Duke of Cam
bridge's Handicap. of 850 sovs.. 1 mile).
The winner. who is owned by Mr. Lionel
Robinson. was favourite throughout. but
only managed to win by a head. The
victory was a popular one. as Brewer's
stable had not been having a fair share
of Fortune's favours.
Mr. Spencer Gollan's filly, by Bill of
Portland-j 'iraillerie. ran into. second
place in the Robert de Witrille Handi
cap. of seven furlangs at the Sandown
Park (Eng.) meeting on June 30. The
winner. V hitechapel. covered the dis
tance in the fast time of 1min. 25sec.
Tiraillerie. who is by Nordernfeldt. won
the Oak Stakes at the 1891 Spring meet
ing of the V.R.C. for Mr. Gollan.

ITEMS OF INTEREST.
(From "Ormonde.")
Kalgoorlie, August 3.
There is every prospect of the spring
round of goldfields meetings being com
menced at Coolgardie to-morrow under
very favourable circumstances.
The weather is particularly bright and
bracing, and the secretary (Mr. Cochrane)
report that the track is in capital order,
and that the course appointments have:
not hitherto beene so attractive as Inow.
There is not any -wagering on Cool
gardie events, and. indeed, very little
business has been done on ?Kalgoorlie or
Boulder-principal races.
The arrival of a considerable nunrber
of coastal and Eastern States sporting
men has stimulated matters, and the
gneral feeling is that the coming cam
paign will be decidedly interesting and
very successful.
RACING IN THE NOR'-WEST.
BROOME TURF CLUB.
Broome, August 3.
The following horses have been scratch
ed for the August meeting:-Breakaway
and C.R., for all engagements; 3Merry
man and Daybreak for the Flying Han
dicap; Silvermine, for the Cup; Light
heart and My Queen, for the District
Handicap.
Racing opens on Tuesday, and the
meeting promises to 'be the best for the
past five years.
RACING IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
S.A.J.C. ANNUAL MEETING.
Adelaide, August 3.
The annual meeting of the S.A. Jockey
Club was held to-day. Mr. John Barker
occupied the chair, and, in moving the
adoption of the report anil balance-sheet.
remarked that, after two years' loss, it
was satisfactory to know that the corner
had been turned. Last season's racing
had resulted in a fair profit, and might
be taken as a sign that they were on the
road to better times. The reports were
adopted.
