EFor the first time for 135 years this
year's Derby was ran at Newmarket in
stead of Epsom and it will be known as
the "New" Derby. Pommern, the win
ner, was favourite for the event, in fact,
ever since he soeaod such an easy vw
tory in the Two Thousand Guineas. the
big race looked to be at his mercy, if ho
retained his form. IHe is by Polymelus
(son of Cylleno, and half-brother to the
Australian sire Grafton) from Mcrry ",r
nes. by St. Hilaire, from Agnes Court. by
Hampton. Although Mr. S. B. Joel is cae
dited with being the breeder of Pom
meru as he owned Merry Agnes when the
colt was foaled it was the previous owner.
Sir Alan Johnstone, who really mated the
mare with Polyrmelus. Sir AlMa took a
dislike to the mare because her then two
year-old Merry Mat disappointed him
badly, and as a :esult hbe sold her, carry
ing 'ommern, to Mr. Joel for, It i+
stated £500, and the covering fee. This is
the first time Mr. S. B. Joel has wen
the Derby, but his brother, MIr. J. B. Joel,
won the event with Sunztar, in 1911.1
ECZEMA ON BACK OF CHILD'S HEAD.
Karitane, Prospect Station, via Sale, Vie.
toria.-"Almost from his birth our baLy,
who is just seven months old, had several
patches of eczema on the back of his head
which grew as he grew, until at last the
patches of eczema were about three inchh-s
long and about two inches wide. Th'-,
gave baby a terrible lot of worry; h1, used
I to rub and rub his head on the pillow
until his head got quite sore.
,"We were advised to try some oint
ment, of which we used a number of
I pots, but, received very little relief from
them. We were told the head would heal
when the weather got cooler. Blaby's hea.l
was awful to look at; in fact, we used
to keep a silk bonnet on mors of the dlay
ti cover these horrible lnkenr pa:rhes
We, fortunately, saw an adverts),rment for
Cuticura Remedies in tlh palle'. and cent
for samples of the Cuticura Soap anl
Cuticura Ointment. which we used accord
ing to directions, and the result has been
simply marvellous. We then purchased
some more Cuticura Soap and Cutwura
Ointment, and in quite a short time baby's
head had lost all traces of th- horrible
cezema. He is now completely cured. and
baby can cet a decent rest now, as all thIe
itchiness is all con". (Signed) Percy W.
