OPENING UP AREA NEAR
GRANVILLE HARBOUR
APPLICATION has been made to the Lands and Survey
Department for an area of land on the West
Coast near Granville Harbour, which with other land
purchased is to be considerably developed by private
enterprise.
The project is under the direction
of Mr. A. Vogel, who has already
commenced work on the land he has
purchased privately.
The Crown land he seeks adjoins
the vast property he has purchased.
It is believed the total area will
exceed 100,000 acres.
Much capital is said to be in-
volved.
Mr. Vogel already has equipment
in the area. This includes a bull-
dozer, traction engine and rotary
hoe. Other equipment is said to
be on order.
He has had discussions with offi-
cers of the Agricultural Department
and finality is expected soon on his
application.
The area of Crown land consists
mostly of button grass plains.
The area he has purchased at
Granville Harbour has not been
worked for some years because it
was inaccessible.
It is said to be among the
richest soil in Tasmania.
On a number of occasions Mr. A.
Lillico has urged that the area
should be opened up when referring
to it in debates in the Legislative
Council.
The old Granville tram track is
being cleared to provide access.
It is intended to raise cattle and
use some of the land for agriculture.
