FAIRWIND IS PRESUMED
LOST; 17
SYDNEY, Wednesday.
The missing motorship "Fairwind," , with her crew
of I 7, is presumed lost, and the air search for the vessel
was abandoned' at noon to-day.
Army ducks are still combing
the coastal area about the Mac-
leay River estuary, but there is
little hope they will find any of
the crew alive.
A R.A.A.F. bomber was with-
drawn from the search to-day
after failing to sight the ship or
any members of the crew.
The 250-ton motorship is be-
lieved to have been lost off. Nam-
bucca Heads in a cyclone on
Saturday. She was bound for
Sydney from Port Moresby.
Technician deckhand D. Connelly,
of Kotara, Newcastle, was
a member of the crew.
Other white men in the crew
were Captain A. Campbell, Ka
reela' Rd, Cremorne; First Of-
ficer J. E. Wilson, Kurnell Rd
Cronulla; Chief Engineer L. T.
Myers, Dellview St, Bondi and
Technician-Deckhand Brightwell
of Sydney.
The last report from the
"Fairwind" was a radio message
at 4.30 p.m on Friday. The
ship reported, she was sheltering
behind North Solitary Island,
short of fuel and would try to
get to Coff's Harbour.
The Minister for External Af-
fairs, Mr.Spencer, said with pro-
found regret yesterday that it
was concluded that the vessel had
foundered with all hands.
