Matron Sage Retires
As Matron-in-Chief
Of Military Forces
The retirement of Colonel
Annie M. Sage, Matron-in-Chief
of the Australian Military Forces
was announced last night by the
Minister for the Army, Mr.
Francis'.' '- e, -':'.,' ;, of
Matron Sage , will retire on
August 17.
Mr, Francis said that on behalf
of the Commonwealth, Government
and the Array he wish
ed to express * appreciation for ¦
the valuable service Matron Sage

r Pending the appointment of a
successor to Matron Sage, the
Deputy Matron in Chief, Lieuten
.ant'Cploner.E. J. Bowe, will- act
in the position.
Matron Sage was known to
thousands of Australian troops
in many theatres of war during
the last war:. I ' ,
a:She joined the Second; A.I.F.
shortly after the outbreak of war
and sailed as matron of the
2/2nd General Hospital for Egypt
where she: served at Kantara.
? In' May, 1941, Matron Sage
was. appointed Matron in Chief
at Headquarters ALF., Middle
East, She returned to. Australia
in May, 1942, and served, at
Land Headquarters, Melbourne,
where she became Matron in
Chief of the Australian Military
Forces in January, 1943.
After her, return to Australia,
she visited all units with which
nurses' were serving including
those in .'New/JGuihea,'':, Bougainville,
Morotai and, Berries. s; .-
