GENERAL NEWS ITEMS
Hooligans at Queenstown.
Hooligans .on Sunday morning broke 38
panes of glass at the Mount Lyell Co.'s
butcher's shop, Drifficld-atrcet. Queens-
town. It is understood that thc names
of the alleged offenders have been secured
by the police, and that police court pro-
ceedings will follow.
Devonport Criminal Court.
There will be.sittings of the Criminal
Court ut Devonport on Tuesday, when
Aloysius Augustus Gillam and John Henry
McGlone will be put on their trial before
Mr. Justice Crisp and a jury on charges
of arson, and Wm. Itevcrs, jun., with hav-
ing been accessory after the fact. W.
Heap Peters will be brought up for sen-
tence for tho larceny of £33 from tho per-
son. The Solicitor-General vMr. h. IC.
Chambers) will conduct the CSBCS for thc
Crown.
Launceston Practice Court.
Mr. Justice Crisp will take business at
Launceston in thc Practice Court on Mon-
day next, and then proceed to Devonport
to preside at the Criminal Court there on
Tuesday.
House Destroyed.
While David 1'arcells and bis family
were out fruit picking on Monday morn-
ing their dwelling at Lower Longley
caught fire, with tho result that, des-
pite the strenuous efforts made to save
it, the building and contents were totally
destroyed. Mr. 1'arcoUs, his wife and
children were left with just what they
stood up in. and thc request is made to
the charitably inclined for any «pare
clothes for the children or blanket« to be
left with Mr. W. J. Moore, baker, Eliza-
beth-street.
Shingle Roof Fire,
Two calls were received at the Fire
Station at 1.12 p.m. yesterday to a fire
in Hill-street at No. 69. A motor hose
carriage and sue men were rushed to the
scene, where it was found that a shingle
roof had been burning, but that the. fire
had been put out with a garden hose.
Only four feet of the shingles was des-
troyed. The house belongs to Mrs. R.
MacDonald, and is occupied by Mr. E. C.
Smith.
Boy Run Over.
I A motor-car. driven by Charles Edgar
I Denham, with five passengers on board,
ran over a boy, 3 years of age. at the cor
j ncr of Roope-st. and Main-road at 7.15 yes
[ terday evening. The boy had run out of a
cloud of dust, and was not seen until he
¡ was almost under the car. Tho brakes
were applied immediately, and it pulled up.
Thc boy was taken to Dr. Elliott and ex-
amined, and then to the Public Hospital,
where he was detained for treatment. Thc
boy's name is Frederic Edward Langford,
and bc lived with his parents at 23 Roope
street. Ho was -in a serious condition
when inquiry wes made at the hospital at
ail early hour this morning.
Fire In Chorch-street
A motor carriage and seven men were
turned out to a jr* which was reported
to the Hobart Brigade at 8.33 p.m. yester-
day. At the rear of an ei^ht-roomed
dwelling occirpicd by Miss Innes, and OTO
cd by Miss Davis, an outhouse was found
to bo on fire. While tho brigade wer«
fighting tho fire a motor-car passed de
liberatcly over the hose, and it appeari
turned back, and crossed it again. Thc
hose might thus have burst, and valuable
time might have been wasted. The mattel
has benn placed m thc bauds of the police
for investigation. The outhouse wai
damaged.
