ATHLETICS.
STAWELL MEETING.
Considerable enthusiasm has been
evinced during, the past fortnight in
local athletic circles in connection with
the annual sports which ore held at Sta
well, Victoria. To win the Gift is-the
ambition of every good ped., and no
wonder Mr. Hastings.Bell received such
large entries from almost every State.
In the first heat Sugg, from South A.us
tralia (to yds), ran a good second, and
G. Bruce (ii) was placed second in the
third heat. A pleasing feature to South
Australians was the forward running of
Menz inthe seventh heat. Running off
14 yds, which is the limit, he won with
great ease by a few yards from Spencer
in 12 I-5th sec. Beveridge, who is sup
posed to have a good chance, was suc
cessful in the eleventh heat from ano
ther South Australian in WVishart, to
whom he was conceding 2z yds. Soon
after capturing thie Eig'ht Hours Shef
field, and after his dicqpute with the
Athletic League,this runner won a : n
dicap in the sister State off 3 yds. Nor
man Clark had to take third place be
hind two flyers in Boyd and Strickland
(W.A.), "then McNamara, the Mary
borough Handicap winner, ran a second
in the fourteenth heat. McManus put
up a good performance in the sixteenth
heat by winning off 3 yds and traversing
-the distance three yards inside' evens.
Not ra few thought that the rich prize
would again be appropriated by a re
tpresenitative of South Australia, espe
cially after the forward running of A.
B. Menz. Owing to his not having won
anything of importance prior to his de
parture for Victoria, he was given the
limit-14 yds. He won his heat in splen
did style by a couple of yards from
Spencer, another South Australian.
Seeing that all the rest of the Adelaide
men were run out the Melbourne people
recollected the performmince of Norman
Clark, when he was successful off the
same mark, and they looked-upon Menz
as the winner. In the second rountmd of
heats he was responsible for the down
fall of WV. McManus, the recognised
champion sprinter of Australia, but
there was not much merit in the vic
tory, as McManus conceded him I yds.
When the final came on for decision
Menz was well backed, but he was un
equal to gaining a situation, the winner
being supplied in A.. E.. Tredinnick,
who ran second to Mc aniamra in the
Maryborough Handicap on New Year's
Day. Running off the ii i-yds mark
ble won an exciting race by about a
yard. The distance was traversed in
12 1-5th sec.--an excellent performance.
J. R. Smith (r3 yds) was second, and J.
J. Kenny (i2% yd-), a brother of 'last
year's winner, was placed third,. whire
A. B. Menz was close i~p fourth. Neither
of the other South Australians ,was suc
cessful.
Alf. Tredinnick is well-known to the
majority of sporting people in this town,
and particularly to cricketers. He did
some running on the goldfields, but
never reaching good condition lie failed'
to come anything' near the form he has
-shown since returning to Victoria.
